John Kerry Supporter: George W. Bush Will Win

By Johan Peters
Oct. 21, 2004

In less then two weeks, the world will know whether President George W. Bush has been re-elected November 2nd or not. Polls are not really clear about who is going to win the presidential elections. In some, President Bush lies ahead. In others, the President and Senator John Kerry are equal. I think President Bush will win in the end.

Huh??? I thought you were a supporter of John Kerry?ī Yes I were and I still am. Iīm not saying I hope President Bush is going to win. Iīm saying I think he is going to win. What makes me think that? Well, during all those months I have published my columns on this site, it became clear to me that most Americans stick to what theyīve got. The USA are a nation in war: war against terrorism, war against Iraq. Of all the reactions I got, most were therefore in favour of the President. Heīs a strong leader, thatīs what the common opinion sounded like. Itīs a logic psychological reaction.

Here in Europe, thereīs much interest in the upcoming American elections. This has always been the case with American elections, but this time the attention to it is much bigger. One canīt open a newspaper, listen to the radio or watch television or thereīs an item about the American elections. Dutch media, to stick to my own country, are somehow neutral. They donīt express their preference for a single candidate openly. What they do, is telling their readers, listeners or viewers about the different opinions both candidates have, how they campaign and what the results of four years of Bush government are. I still donīt believe they are that great and donīt expect things will become better during an eventual second term.

So, donīt worry, Iīm still the critical European guy who eagerly hopes for a change in power. Just like the great majority among the European people. Even those in Great Britain, where prime minister Tony Blair has lost much goodwill because of the Iraq war. President Bush doesnīt have much supporters in Europe after all. Are we all that stupid or are we right? Are all the Americans who oppose to President Bushīs policy (and there are millions!) unpatriotic or what?

Of course, I still do hope Senator John Kerry wins. American voters decide in the end. May your final choice turn out to be right. And may American policy be more well-considered after November 2nd in the first place.
