Oct. 18, 2004 Apparently - from some of those who have met him - Osama bin Laden has beautiful eyes and a charismatic personality. On a person to person level, it's hard not to like Osama bin Laden. Prior to the invasion of Afghanistan, he was leader of a loosely-knit organisation with a huge influence in the Islamic world. Many people knew of him, and he was immensely respected by hard-line Islamic activists and their apprentices. Osama bin Laden was born to wealth and business success, and appears to have been a successful leader of his cause. No mean feat when you consider the fractious, self-important people he was leading. It must have been like herding cats. But his calm and positive personality seems to have kept them together. They respected him and valued his occasional video appearances. But since America and its allies took over Afghanistan, we have had no videos from the great man. There have been a few audio tapes purporting to come from him, but no videos. The CIA is assuring us that the voice on the tapes is him (see the disclaiming footnotes explaining margins of error) and the people in Washington who should know are taking that at face value. It doesn't make sense in this day and age. Murdering kidnappers distribute their awful movies on the web within hours. Mobile phones can record videos, let alone an average laptop or tourist digital camera. Are we supposed to believe that Osama bin Laden is not appearing because he's having a bad beard day? Or he just doesn't feel like it? Here's one old fool who doesn't believe it. There are so many good reasons for him to put in an appearance, and next to none for hiding away.
