Mary Smith Ruined Mary Smith's Life

By Max Burns
Oct. 17, 2004

I have never been so thoroughly disgusted with the decency of our nation as I was after reading the Useless Knowledge column, “Pro-Abortionists like John Kerry Ruined My Life.” Never have I seen such reckless irresponsibility and avoidance of maturity as I did when I read Mary Smith’s senseless rant against Senator Kerry and the pro-choice voters of America.

Smith claims that John Kerry ruined her life because she contracted AIDS from a blood transfusion she got during an abortion that, she admits, she obtained illegally through a false identification obtained God knows where. This statement alone is enough to make any sane American discredit her entire argument.

I have said in previous columns that I believe abortion should only be legal in cases of rape, incest, or when the mother stands a large chance of dying in delivery. I do not believe that abortion should be a wholesale procedure performed simply because a consenting mother-to- be does not want to have the child. Mary Smith only proves why I think this way.

Was John Kerry the man who she consensually engaged in pre-marital sex with? No. She engaged in consensual sex of her own free will and now seeks someone to blame for the consequence she endured.

Was John Kerry the man who told her to hide the fact that she was pregnant from her family, to sneak around and look for immoral and illegal ways of obtaining an abortion? No. Again, Smith must take responsibility for her own actions. She did this herself. John Kerry and the pro-choice voters did not coach her.

Was John Kerry the man who helped her obtain a false I.D., in violation of United States law? It seems so far that everything leading up to this abortion: the sex, the hiding and lies, the false I.D., has all come from Ms. Smith’s own actions. Now she seeks to place blame on someone else because she cannot accept that it was her own fault that she became pregnant.

Ms. Smith blames John Kerry for giving her AIDS during a faulty blood transfusion during the course of her abortion. She wisely decides to ignore the fact that she was responsible for every event leading up to the abortion. I suppose, for some, it is easier to blame others than to accept responsibility for their own mistakes.

I believe Ms. Smith states it well herself, “…I got a fake I.D. which was not hard to do and went to the abortion clinic.” She does not say, “John Kerry got me a fake I.D. and drove me to the abortion clinic.” Furthermore, she states, “…I decided to abort the baby,” not “John Kerry told me I should abort the baby.”

It is time for Ms. Smith to come to grips with the reality of the situation, and stop blaming others for what she did of her own free will. It is time to face the cold truth: John Kerry was not the one who ruined Mary Smith’s life. She did that herself.
