Oct. 14, 2004 If Teresa Heinz-Kerry isn’t fuming, today, she should be. For that matter, so should Mary Cheney! During the debate, John Kerry, as his VP running mate had done before him, brought up the fact that Vice President’s daughter Mary is gay. When both the President and junior Senator Kerry were asked their positions on gay marriage, by Moderator Bob Schieffer, Kerry replied: “We're all God's children, Bob. And I think if you were to talk to Dick Cheney's daughter, who is a lesbian, she would tell you that she's being who she was, she's being who she was born as.” This was completely out of the realm of the question and it was obvious, to those who heard it, that John Kerry brought it up… just to bring it up. Kerry and Edwards had been coached to do so. I could almost hear Carville’s voice saying ‘Get it in ‘dere, boys. Y’all find a way!” Of course, to continue toward winning the election at any costs to anyone but himself, Kerry complied. Insulting Republicans, no matter whom they are or how unconscionable the statement, is old hat to Kerry. But, when he insulted his wife (Kerry’s current meal ticket), I was shocked! As the last question to both candidates, Schieffer asked: “We've come, gentlemen, to our last question. And it occurred to me as I came to this debate tonight that the three of us share something. All three of us are surrounded by very strong women. We're all married to strong women. Each of us have two daughters that make us very proud. I'd like to ask each of you, what is the most important thing you've learned from these strong women?” President Bush said he had learned to ‘stand up straight and not to scowl”, which brought laughter. He then told us of his and Laura’s first meeting and that it had been, on the President’s part, “love at first sight”. The President also said: “…they see a compassionate, strong, great first lady in Laura Bush. I can't tell you how lucky I am.” John Kerry’s response to Schieffer’s question was substantially different from the President’s. In his response, Kerry said: “Well, I guess the president and you and I are three examples of lucky people who married up. And some would say maybe me more so than others.” As this is Kerry’s second marriage and he divorced wife #1 (worth approximately $300MM) for wife #2 (at the time worth approximately $750MMM), his response drew laughter. But…then he went on (with one foot already in quicksand) to place his other foot in the muck. John Kerry said: “I say, if I could just say a word about a woman that you didn't ask about, but my mom passed away a couple years ago, just before I was deciding to run. And she was in the hospital, and I went in to talk to her and tell her what I was thinking of doing. And she looked at me from her hospital bed and she just looked at me and she said, Remember: integrity, integrity, integrity. Those are the three words that she left me with.” Note: I was particularly ‘moved’ by the “integrity, integrity, integrity” comments from his Mother. Kerry’s Mother knew his failings well. This is something that we, in the public, have only learned over the past year. Kerry has a definite problem in the integrity area. Kerry then praised the President and First lady, when he said: “I've watched him with the first lady, who I admire a great deal, and his daughters. He's a great father. And I think we're both very lucky.” The only comment Kerry made about his own wife and daughters was, almost, as an aside: “And my daughters and my wife are people who just are filled with that sense of what's right, what's wrong.” Kerry barely mentioned his wife. It left me, and others with whom I’ve spoken, wondering if Kerry has his eye on a new and wealthier woman.
