What Would Zarqawi Be Doing If He Weren't In Iraq?

By Eric George
Oct. 13, 2004

So what would Zarqawi be doing if he wasn't making trouble in Iraq? There is a suggstion that it is better to have him and his brothers 'out in the open' in Iraq rather than making trouble elsewhere. The theory is that if you draw all the bad guys into a festering sore point (Iraq) you can zap them.

Unfortunately, it's not that easy. Zarqawi has shown himself to be elusive. He is also good at publicity, getting himself all over Arabic television by murdering people on camera. I'm sure that he feels he's really getting some where when he sees those poor, poor families begging for their loved ones' lives. In the eyes of his friends and also of many ordinary people in the Middle East, he is a very important person.

When he does get zapped - he'll slip up eventually - that doesn't get rid of the problem. Just as zapping Palestinian mosquitos has not let Israel sleep peacefully, so zapping Iraq terrorists won't work in the end. There are two main breeding grounds for active fanatics at the moment - Palestine and Iraq. Ratchetting up the level of violence just seems to increase their number, and their devotion to destruction. You need to kill them faster than they are being created to eventually have some kind of stability. That's how Sadam used to control things. Come to think of it, Stalin had much the same attitude. And his mirror Hitler.

If Zarqawi was not in Iraq, where would he be? The man would probably be trying to stir up trouble in a country like Saudi, Pakistan or Egypt. But you can't play murder and mayhem on the streets of those countries for long - their governments and their people would suppress you very quickly. Iraq, on the other hand, is a happy hunting ground. Ineffective government, lots and lots of soft high-publicity targets, lots of young crazies brought up on a diet of rabid anti-Americanism - what more could he ask for?

If he sits still long enough to think about it, he probably does not want US involvement to change. If he and his friends were to 'win' and the US pulls out quickly, there would be chaos for a short time while the new Sadam establishes himself, and then there would be a wave of suppression that will make Sadam look like Father Christmas. And Zarqawi will be one of the first targets.

I bet Zarqawi is praying for a Bush victory. He wants things to stay just the way they are now.
