Oct. 6, 2004 Before discussing John Kerry’s economic plan, I’d like to offer some observations on last night’s Vice Presidential debate. I actually found last night’s VP debate interesting. In particular, VP Cheney was knowledgeable, strong and articulate as he contradicted Mr. Edwards’ incorrect data (spec. Edwards’ false claims of the dollars thus far spent on the war and the casualties incurred by our allies) and then took him to task on his Senate attendance and voting record. Both John Edwards and John Kerry are infamous for ‘making things up’ as they go along. In this arena, Edwards, like his running mate, didn’t disappoint us. Edwards said, as his running mate Kerry also claims, that we had ‘already spent $200B in the Iraq war’. Cheney countered with the correct statistic of $120B. Note: Even after this correction, Edwards (who appeared to be stuck on an unalterable course of disinformation), Edwards repeated the $200B number. Edwards said that the US had incurred 90% of the casualties in the Iraqi war. VP Cheney corrected him by saying the casualties incurred (including the Iraqi dead) were closer to 50% US and 50% coalition. Like his running mate John Kerry, Edwards said they have a “plan” to ‘win the war’ and get us out of Iraq. And like John Kerry, he referred people to the Kerry/Edwards website, so that they can try to figure out what it is. The impression I received was that Edwards hasn’t looked at it and, still, doesn’t know what it is. What essentially remains is the plain and indisputable fact that that the incumbent Bush/Cheney ticket’s plan is both coherent and understandable. That plan includes the US continuing to train Iraqis to protect their own country, an Iraqi democratic election in January 2005 and continuing to stabilize and monitor the country; so that we can begin bringing our troops home In response to the Kerry/Edwards’ plan, VP Cheney accurately said: “They don't have a plan. Basically, it's an echo.” Now, on to the competing Economic plans. The Bush/Cheney economic plan is already firmly and successfully in place. President Bush affected tax cuts straight across the board…for EVERYONE. This has stimulated businesses and we are already seeing strongly positive results for the economy, including a greatly increased number of jobs. Also, some in the lower tax brackets have been permanently removed from having to pay any taxes! Note: When Edwards brought up the job losses, under President Bush’s administration, I regret that VP Cheney didn’t correct and remind him that clearly 90% of those losses were the result of the 9/11 attacks in our country. The Kerry/Edwards economic plan was reiterated by Edwards. Their plan is to raise taxes on everyone (including small business S corps.) who “earns” $200K or more a year. Suffice it to say, those who have already made their fortunes (like Kerry and Edwards) won’t be impacted. That’s always been the liberal plan. In Communist/Socialist (AKA “liberal”) countries there are 2 classes of people: The very wealthy and those who work to keep them wealthy; by paying exorbitant taxes. Under Communism, the working class is called the proletariat. This is the way that Communism and Socialism keep only certain individuals in the ‘Elite’ category. With an inordinately high tax rate, there is little to no incentive to excel or to increase the workforce. That is contrary to the American spirit. But, it is what John Kerry and John Edwards are proposing and would force upon us. The bottom line is that reelecting President Bush will allow us to continue keeping more of our money. With the Kerry/Edwards ticket we give more of our money to them. Pretty simple choice. ------------ About the author: About the author: Sher Zieve is a Conservative political commentator.
