Oct. 1, 2004 Each morning my mom always sends me the "celebrate this day" greeting. Really quite fun and interesting. September 26th is, "International Tool Day. Celebrating folks who make their living by using all kinds of tools." I wrote this one day looking at a picture in the paper of some men working on an overpass over there somewhere in the Phoenix area. Well too, I am a brick layer's daughter and sister and I'll have you know, "The best hod carrier that they have ever had !!!" I've been helping my dad since I was 4 years old, making 10 cents an hour, carrying one brick at a time, and my trowel was a tile trowel, and I walk like I'm pushin' a wheelbarrow. just a tid bit of info to letcha know... brick and block plural, is like sheep plural. So,here's one for all those folks, that make their living using all kinds of tools. There's somethin' about a workin' man. Levi's and boots and flannel shirts, hard hats and belts for safety. Shovels and hammers and trowels. Saws of all kinds, and jack hammers, too. Concrete, lumber, rebar and block, beams of steel and piles of sand. These workin' men all dusty and dirty, with calloused hands, forearms of strength and hands of muscle, too. Orange barrels of water, lunch boxes, and all these men, lined up against the walls, or feet danglin' down from the steel beams, ten stories up in the air, at noon. And when their day is through, they dust themselves off and climb in their trucks, which smell of dust and dirt as well. Oh! What a wonderful smell !!! They drag themselves through the door. A grunt says, "Honey I'm Home!", then hit the shower most days. Some days, just collapse in the nearest chair, till dinner fills the air. Then it's off to the shower and ready to eat. Don't really mind cookin' a feast, 'cause the workin' man, sure loves to eat!! A little tv, then it's off to bed and back to sleep. Their days start hours 'fore dawn. And then they're off again, for more callouses, on their hands. There's somethin' about a Workin' Man, that just, really, turns me on ! ------------ About the author Tracey Lin Kilgore: I write from my heart as the words are given to me. He lives in our hearts and helps me, through my writings. Although I think that I am writing for others, quite often it is written for me, to help me and get me through the times of my life. Not all are saddened times and some things are really quite fun. The majority of my writings have messages in them of an awareness that needs to be seen and practiced more often in today's times by more of today's people of this modern society.
