Did John Kerry Win The First Debate?

By Sher Zieve
Oct. 1, 2004

In last night’s debate, John Kerry looked and sounded good. He was on his game. I will give him that. His technique was as smooth as polished onyx and his words slipped easily and trippingly from his tongue. Grudgingly, I was impressed with his delivery. I have to admit, on style and technique John Kerry the orator won. But, with further examination of the substance in what he said, I had to ask “what did he deliver”? What was the core of John Kerry’s position? In consideration of the fact that Mr. Kerry could be the next President of the United States, I wanted to hear how he planned to address the real and present danger of terrorism. Kerry sounded confident but, most of the ‘cohesive plans’ he said he planned to employ are already being implemented by President Bush. Kerry is still taking a ‘me too but, I can do it better’ position. Mr. Kerry went on to say he will lead and knows “how to lead alliances” with other countries. However, Kerry said repeatedly that he considers President Bush’s 30 country alliance in Iraq an “alliance of the coerced and the bribed”. Also, under her brother’s direction, John Kerry’s sister Diana Kerry is in Australia attempting to undermine John Howard’s administration and end the alliance between that country and President Bush’s administration. That’s nuts! It would appear that Kerry’s ‘building of alliances’ will be with countries other than our current allies. It again seems that what Kerry says and what Kerry does are in stark conflict with one another.

Kerry said that our troops are “overextended” in the Afghani and Iraqi theatres, a dubious ‘fact’ that President Bush disputed, and said: “That‘s why, in my plan, I add two active duty divisions to the United States Army, not for Iraq, but for our general demands across the globe. I also intend to double the number of Special Forces so that we can do the job we need to do with respect fighting the terrorists around the world.” Really? If we’re already, as Mr. Kerry suggests, “overextended” how does he plan to bring on more troops? Will he, as his Democrat colleagues are proposing, reinstitute the draft? President Bush made it exceedingly clear that, under a continued Bush presidency, our armed forces will remain voluntary. Kerry also said: “The president always has the right, and always has had the right, for preemptive strike.” But, then he went on to say: “But if and when you do it, Jim, you have to do it in a way that passes the test…that passes the global test.” Global test? So, the president has the right to affect a preemptive strike but, only if other countries agree? That doesn’t make sense, unless one realizes that Mr. Kerry’s plans include the dissolution of the sovereign nature of the United States; in deference to the UN.

Apart from the attack counter-attack of the debates (and yes…I wish that President Bush had more actively punched and deflated Mr. Kerry’s disingenuous balloons), there was one thing Kerry said that sent chills down my spine. John F. Kerry stated: “Right now the president is spending hundreds of millions of dollars to research bunker-busting nuclear weapons” and went on to say “you talk about mixed messages. We‘re telling other people, ‘you can‘t have nuclear weapons, but we‘re pursuing a new nuclear weapon that we might even contemplate using’. Not this president. I‘m going to shut that program down, and we‘re going to make it clear to the world we‘re serious about containing nuclear proliferation.” Kerry, as was ludicrously proposed in the 1970s, is calling for Unilateral Disarmament”! Terrorists and rogue nations (like North Korea) have to LOVE this man. If Kerry is elected, he will turn the US over to them. Last night, Kerry stated unequivocally that (if he is elected President of the United States) he will seek and destroy the United States’ weapons programs. This is really sending our troops into harm’s way and underlines Senator Zell Miller’s comments at the RNC convention. Kerry really DOES plan to use Spit-Balls!
