Nov. 7, 2004 I have learned the murder on Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh has also been big news in the USA. I was asked to give my opinion on it. Here it comes. Theo van Gogh has been murdered in a very brutal, inhuman way. While he was riding on his bicycle, he was shot. When he lay on the ground, he was stabbed with a knife and finally literally slaughtered. This was all done by a 26 year old Moroccan who had been influenced by fundamentalists present in The Netherlands. Much have been said in Dutch press about the reason of this murder. I give you my view about how it could happen, but first some more background information about Van Gogh is needed. Theo van Gogh, who wasn´t really related closely to the famous Dutch painter, didn´t only makes movies. He also wrote columns, had his own television show a couple of years ago. He was not a gentleman. He insulted many (famous) Dutch writers, stars etc. He offended Jews by saying their holocaust got far too much attention. He was afraid Islamic fundamentalists would become a danger in the Netherlands. He shared this view with a, originally Islamic, female politician called Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Hirsi Ali is from Africa, and has been raped in her teen years by an Islamic cleric. She told about this experience, her youth in different Islamic countries and what´s wrong with the Islamic religion as far as she´s concerned on Dutch television some 2 months ago. At the end, she showed a short movie she had made with Van Gogh in which a naked Islamic woman could be seen with texts out of the Koran written on her body. This was meant as a complaint against the Islam as a religion. Now we´re at the point why the Moroccan killed Van Gogh. Van Gogh has been, already before that movie, been identified as anti-Islam. He called Islamic people ´goat fuckers´ for instance (literally translation). Of course, there´s always the judge who decides how far one can use his freedom of speech. Muslims didn´t go to the judge. They put Van Gogh on a ´hit list´. Hirsi Ali has been on it for years already. She has got police protection day and night. Van Gogh had not, he didn´t want to and he hadn´t be offered. So far for the context of the murder. There´s one thing I don´t understand in this whole story: the role of Dutch intelligence services. Dutch intelligence services knew the culprit of the crime. They knew he hang around with a group of about 150 fundamentalists in total they keep an eye on very well, as they say. However, the culprit himself hadn´t been followed closely. That has turned out to be an unforgivable mistake seen what he has done. And I can´t understand why they didn´t keep an eye on him. They actually knew he visited those fundamentalists. Surely not to have a nice dinner of couscous with them. One murder doesn´t make a Dutch jihad. Still, a group of 150 fundamentalists present in The Netherlands, a group of - no one knows how many – others hanging around with them and Dutch intelligence services are not able to get a grip on them. That´s the scary thing Dutch government should do something about. Otherwise the murder of Van Gogh won´t be the last. ------------ About the author: Johan Peters is a freelance journalist from Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
