Nov. 3, 2004 I have been most heartened by the good sense shown by the majority of Americans who today return George W. Bush to the Presidency. Despite vicious, often even vile, campaigns waged by Democrats in their unbridled hatred of the man and his administration, the American people apparently saw through all that and returned a good and decent man to the White House for another four years. I watched the concession speeches a while ago, given by both John Edwards and John Kerry. John Edwards was considerably more combative than Kerry was but both candidates conceded that the American people had spoken loudly and clearly. Perhaps Edwards was as bitter-sounding as he was because he's now out of a job altogether. In fact, it was predicted that had he tried to retain his seat in the Senate from South Carolina, he'd likely have lost IT by as much as 20 percentage points. He couldn't even deliver his own home state for his slate, much like Al Gore couldn't deliver HIS in 2000. The Kerry campaign was based largely on falsehoods and that may have been what ultimately sank it. John Kerry is NOT a "Vietnam War hero" which he claimed to be over and over and over again for the past year and a half--and, thanks largely to the Swift Boat Veterans, America began to realize it. John Kerry was NEVER an "effective Senator" as his supporters claimed and that contributed to his decisive defeat, too. President Bush, on the other hand, was, and is, as transparent as clear glass. What you see is what you get. He has never tried to be something that he's not. John Kerry pretended to have some sort of connection to the "common man." It just didn't work. He's an ultra-wealthy elitist without any real understanding of America nor reverence for its Constitution, its mores nor its traditions. He's pledged to keep "fighting" for jobs, health care reform, etc. etc. ad nauseum, but most people recognize that those efforts are for his own political survival and not for any REAL feeling for the issues themselves. The thing that's surprised most of the pundits was how wrong the exit polling turned out to be. It was no surprise to those of us who know how such things are done....and why. The national media must be absolutely furious this morning. Despite their best efforts, their guy went down in ignominious defeat and they're probably all sitting around a table somewhere trying to understand why and what they did wrong. The answer is pretty simple. Nobody BELIEVES them any longer--at least enough people are skeptical of their pompous pronouncements that they are rapidly becoming irrelevant. Tom Brokaw, Dan Rather, Katie Kouric and others like them don't enjoy the unquestioned credibility that they once did because there are too many other outlets (like this one, for example) for the truth for them to have the effect on public opinion that they once had. That's a GOOD thing, in my opinion, too. I was "polled" yesterday evening and told the pollster that I was an avid Kerry supporter. I did so because I wanted to INTENTIONALLY skew their results. I suspect that lots of folks did the same thing. I know that's dangerous, but in my home State, there was no way that John Kerry was going to prevail, no matter WHAT the polls said, and besides, I didn't vote until very late in the day. At the end of this cycle, George W. Bush has his mandate and we've given him a good, working majority in both Houses to make positive changes for the better. Tax breaks need to be made permanent. In fact, we should work towards lowering income taxes even further. It's the surest way to get the economy off and running again while giving us control over our own money. The regulatory burden on Americans and businesses needs reduction, as well. That'll prevent companies from moving "off-shore" for less burdensome conditions as they have been for the past 5 years or so. Most importantly, we MUST defeat Osama Bin Laden and the terrorists and win the War on Terrorism. A Kerry Presidency would NOT have tried to do that. A Bush Presidency most certainly WILL. ------------ About the author: David A.
