Career Thoughts

By Johnnie Craig
May 29, 2004

Experience is often referred to as “Hindsight”. I would like to take full credit for my lifetime accomplishments but that would be a lie. Looking back on my career I have been very fortunate to have experienced many lucky breaks, a solid and reputable education (without high school or college), well paid positions of renown status, and a fulfilling and interesting life style. My most outstanding accomplishments would have been the patience to wait for an opportunity and the fortitude to pursue it no matter what the outcome might be. I was given the opportunity to make up for high school with a GED equivalency, to substitute for college with Engineering level courses within the Federal Aviation Administration and other sources, and to gain experience at an Engineering level due to a shortage of graduate Engineers.

All of my accomplishments required considerable dedication and hard work on my part but would not have been possible had I not decided that I would not accept less than what I was capable of. And how is one to know what they are capable of unless they apply themselves without restraint or reservations.

I do not consider myself or any one else I know qualified to guide anyone into a career. I have met many successful persons who were unhappy. I have met many persons who elected to remain in non-professional fields and were quite content. I have met a few persons, like myself, whose desires and goals seem to change constantly. I have met very few persons who, like myself, would not accept a negative answer in any venture they chose to undertake. They simply keep trying until their goal is accomplished.

If I were to offer advice to anyone seeking a career it would be to tell them they are overlooking their available opportunities, or not giving themselves credit for the ability they possess to obtain results. Everyone can succeed. Everyone can be happy with his or her lifetime results. Very few persons are denied all opportunities for success and happiness. Sometimes it may seem as if all is lost but patience is a virtue. Please try again.
