The OTHER Side of Life -- Take A "Pause" From Menopause!

By Nancy Kobe-Thompson
May 29, 2004

No one ever told us about the other side of life when we were little girls. The 1950’s society in which we lived painted this rosy picture – a young, gallant prince would come along, sweep us off our planted feet, love and provide for us until our deaths. Oh, give us all a break – that is what we get – breaks -- broken hearts, broken spirits, broken promises, broken lives, broken crystal and China!

At the age of fifty years, I experienced empty nest, grandparenthood, joblessness and the final (thank God), full-blown stage of menopause. Where are the hormones when you need them the most? – gone, gone with the children, gone with youth, gone with the way your husband used to look at you and now gone to the young women with whom he comes into contact everyday.

It is not a time for us to feel sorry for ourselves or beat ourselves up over the life choices we made in bad way. It is a time to realize our fullest potential is now – on the “other” side of life. Like never before, we 50+ ladies get to use the experience we have learned through our past choices and share this knowledge with any other human who might listen, with our grandchildren who see us as shining mentors instead of demented. We also get to comfort our colleagues and “partners in prime” to let them know that there is light at the end of the mid-life tunnel.

Ladies – do remember: A woman’s worth is not measured by the financial wealth she accumulates during her lifetime. I believe it to be by the person she is at her base, the one who raises children to give back to society in good way, the one who is on the executive board as a result of hard work, and the one who can rest her head easily at night knowing that she has done her best everyday and that she will continue to do even better on “the other side of life”.
