Self-Publish? Or Hope For A Lucky Break?

By Arthur L. Burton 3

I have read reviews on major sites that have been outstanding when it comes to well known writers. But what about the little guy? What about the poor writer who has hopes for the dream of being publised?

He has a rude awakening if he or she believes that the content of your writing will indeed land you a traditional publisher. There is plenty involved here.

First there is the dreaded querry letter, which can sometimes take hundreds of revisions in order to get a publisher to even take a look at it. There is also luck that is involved if you are a writer of fiction.

Is your querry letter interesting enough to be solicited by the publishing company, or is it that since you have not written a novel that your querry letter not even given consideration. For several years there was only two options, one was a vanity press would definetely publish your writing at astronomical prices. Second the traditional publisher that really was not interested in an unknown writer.

I encounter many obstacles during my writing career and found that the new independent self- publishers are offering a much needed service. Don't get me wrong they are still a form of vanity press publishing but they offer much more. They offer distribution which is a very important part of selling your book.

There is indeed plenty of leg work involved with this type of publishing as well, and there are companies out there that will take your money and leave the marketing up to you.

But that is fine, because there are writers groups that you can join for free, and find out how others like yourself have marketed their books. I choose publishing with self publishers because they get the book out there, and you reap the majority of the royalties. Let alone you market yourself your book and you learn how to sell it. Indeed it sounds a bit difficult but with most traditional publishers you still have to market your own book. It would be great if you are already working in a publishing company well then you have the inside information and you can make your book a bestseller. But as for the rest of us who are not so lucky, we put the book out there and by word of mouth the sales begin to flow.

Consider this!

Self Publish and become an independent writer or wait until a traditional publisher is giving out charity and picks up your manuscript.
