May 22, 2004 In the news... It seems that 58% of those polled on AOL (160,000 total) believe that Donald Rumsfeld had a hand in the abuse of Iraqi prisoners. I believe he did as well. Why? Because while I would believe prisoner abuse does go on all over the world I do not think that it is something that an abuser would want broadcast all over the world via pictures posted on the internet. The Defense Dept. denies any abuse alligations saying that, "prisoners always are treated under guidelines of the Geneva Conventions"(AOL News). Do they think that we (Americans) are complete morons? I think it would be very naive for anyone to think that any given situation in the world operates in a smooth, professional and law abiding manner 100% of the time. However, it is a great theory. MY OPINION: Our military is over fighting a war not because of Saddam; not because of the twin towers. Our men are over there dying in a war over oil. It is all about money. As far as what the "officers in the pictures" did.. well, a picture can tell many different stories. Here we have Americans over in Iraq fighting a senseless war. We have a few military personnel on duty to guard prisoners. Now, I'm sure these military personnel are at least fairly intelligent. If you're going to abuse someone or do anything illegal for that matter, are you going to have someone take pictures of you doing it? I don't think so. Those pictures were staged. They were staged to take the focus off of the important topic. THE WAR. Why? Because nothing is going the way it is supposed to be going and our government needed a controversy to divert the attention of the AMERICAN PEOPLE. They needed American soldiers to do "something shocking" so that the President could look like the good guy again. If anyone has any comments, please feel free to do so!
