May 20, 2004 I read on the Internet today that Alfred Hitchcock's thriller, "PYSCHO" won out over the Wicked Witch and Bambi's mom for all time best movie death. Wow! I never knew there was a contest. Be that as it may, as an independent filmmaker and screenwriter, I am always looking for that shot, sound and camera angle that will send the audience away vowing never to shower alone or go swimming day or night in shark infested waters. (by the way, my vote goes to Bruce) But, that is not the real focus of this article. My beef is with the networks and other media outlets that can't seem to get enough of REAL MOVIE DEATH. And...there is probably more to come. The morbid photos broadcast all over the world of our soldiers humilliating IRAQI PRISONERS OF WAR! An innocent american citizen getting a shave from the neck up by a Terrorist barber in graphic color and sound. (no editing or CGI required) Burned corpses hanging from bridge posts, now they should be getting awards. NOT! I am saddened by our and their thirst for blood. What next, GLADIATOR GAMES, where we send Iraqis into an arena with hungry lions as George "CALIGULA" Bush gives the thumbs down sign? Where and when will it end? We march into their cities with the proclamation "We have come to civilize you," as we wipe our behinds with the Geneva Convention. Maybe we should stop the flow of news from the middle east altogether. No graphic pictures to incite already "MAD" individuals. No media blitz from AL-JUNKEERA or EL-BALONEY. No subterfuge from shameless american broadcasters chasing ratings at the expense of horrified family members. No news, could very well be good news. STOP IT! I support our troops, NOT SENSLESS WAR! WHY? Because they are kids from my hometown and yours. They want to come home in one piece and get on with their lives, and why not? Americans need to mobilize in a way that has never been seen before. Better than those heady days in the 60's when people protested the war in Vietnam. Sadaam is gone. Nuff said. I vote for a WORLD DAY OF PEACE. June 6th, 2004 the day in history that we invaded Europe to end another conflict. Just for one day, NO DEATH, VIOLENCE OR HATE ANYWHERE ON EARTH. Maybe it will catch on and we can leave the best death for the movies. Hey, please pass the popcorn. ------------ About the author: Lee Shargel, is an independent filmmaker and executive producer of FilmWorks LSD. He is an internationally known author and screenwriter and activist for JOY. His new film, the supernatural thriller, FACADE, (hoping to find a distributor), has a great MOVIE DEATH SCENE where you don't see much BUT IT SURE IS SCARY! It may be the scene that sends Pyscho to the showers. Remember folks, it's the MOVIES!
