Being Proactive

By Victoria Molta
June 29, 2004

I attended an event in Hartford at Constitution Plaza/Riverfront to help carry out 'Connecticut: Bridging the Gap,' adding a voice to tens of thousands of others across the country for Health Care National Day of Action. The purpose was to speak out on behalf of the need for quality, affordable healthcare for all. A small group of us met on the bridge, some with signs. A participant called WFSB News about our gathering. Within a few minutes, we saw a WFSB van across the street and a man stepped outside holding a TV camera, ready to interview us for the news program. (They did happen to be strategically located near us).

It was slightly disappointing that more people didn't show up. Many Americans just aren't pro-active enough politically and there are so many opportunities to make our voices heard. In this country, many people take freedom for granted, and feel that it is an automatic given, when in fact, it is a great gift. Ideally, freedom and opportunities should extend to countries around the world. Unfortunately, many people who dare to speak out are attacked, institutionalized and set apart from the communities, even killed for their beliefs. The world is rife with conflicts, violence, injustice and it exists even in our own backyard. We are not immune from war. Violence exists in America. We are not immune from injustice or poverty. They occur here as well. Many people don't want to see the underside and underbelly of what is happening in this country. We cover it up, like putting make-up on a pockmarked face. People don't want to see suffering, ugliness, indignities. But, the first step is to take off the blinders and see the world for what it is: a beautiful yet flawed planet. As citizens, we are responsible for making the world a better place to live. Freely give what you have freely received.
