June 29, 2004 (Adulyadej, 1997; Kronkaew, 2003; Booncharoenpol, 2004): “Self-sufficient economy is a philosophy that guides the livelihood and behavior of people at all levels, from the family to the community to the country; the matter concerns national development and administration. The crisis calls for a ‘middle way or moderate way’ to be considered, especially in pursuing economic development along with globalization. Sufficiency means moderation and enough, including immune system against shocks from the outside or from the inside. Intelligence, attentiveness, and extreme care should be used to ensure that all plans and every step of their implementation are based on knowledge. At the same time we must build up the spiritual foundation of all people in the nation, especially state officials, scholars, and business people at all levels, so they are conscious of moral integrity and honesty and they strive for the appropriate wisdom to live with forbearance, diligence, self-awareness, self- reliance, intelligence, and attentiveness. In this way we can hope to maintain balance and be ready to cope with rapid physical, social, environmental, and cultural changes from outside the country” 1. “…One should not live luxuriously and must cut down expenses in an appropriate manner….” It means that one must stick to an economical style of living and attempt to reduce daily expenses especially for lavish items. 2. “…Success of all people comes from good conduct and proper work….” It means that we must be true to oneself and work righteously as well as honestly, even under harsh living conditions. 3. “…The meaning of genuine happiness is the happiness derived from one’s fair conduct, both of intention and action, and not from luck or taking advantage over others…” It means that we must stop selfish competition and the habit of taking advantage over others when doing business as mostly happened in the past. 4. “…The reason for encouraging people to learn more and become stable in their lives is for their own happiness from, first, leading a sufficient lifestyle, and then from being proud of themselves for being able to stand on their own…” It means that we must not surrender in finding ways to pull oneself out of hardship, by striving to learn more and more in order to earn sufficient income. 5. “…Avoid committing wrong-doings that will destroy oneself or others, eliminate one’s inner greed, remain true to oneself, as well as preserve and enhance the good virtues within oneself…” It means that we must behave morally and refrain from all greed. Thai society collapsed to this adverse economic situation because a lot of people betrayed their own country without any shame. According to the philosophy, strategy, and principles of self-sufficient economy of His Majesty the King, maintaining a balance in the five following aspects describes the principle of being self-reliant development by self-sufficient economy strategy. First, a balance in the state of mind: one needs to be strong, self-reliant, compassionate, and flexible. Besides, one should possess a good conscience and regard public interests as a higher priority than one’s own. Finally, a balance in economic affairs: one needs to increase earnings, to reduce expenses, and to pursue a decent life. ------------ About the author: Somanattha A., a young lady of thirties, is an accounting lecturer at Krirk University, Thailand.
