June 28, 2004 I can't remember in my lifetime [three-quarters of a century] when there was so much to celebrate in one short period. June 2004 was a time when all Americans came together to participate in so many memorable events. Politics and disagreements were set aside for the most part. All America remembered and embraced what had been sacrificed for us over the years. The men and women of World War Two finally have a memorial befitting the sacrifices they made for our freedom. It is a beautiful memorial presented with dignity and reverences in accordance with the price so many paid in life and limb. This Memorial Day paid tribute to all the men and women of all the wars. It is a reminder what America stands for, freedom for all. America is one of the very few nations willing to sacrifice for the freedom of others. Young men and women go to war for the sole purpose of creating the opportunity of life for the oppressed. They seek no rewards and have learned to expect no thanks. Yet they continue to go where others fear to tread. Senior citizens returned to the beaches of Normandy France this June. They came to visit comrades they hadn’t seen in half a century. The conversations were all one sided but I’m sure they were every bit as heartfelt as that day in June so long ago when they parted company. The war to end all wars scarcely made a dent. We honored a great man President Ronald Reagan. We had long ago mourned his loss as his body and mind slowly slipped away now we could reflect on his many accomplishments. The thing I will always remember about President Reagan is his smile; he smiled with his eyes as well as his lips. Any man who can do that knows who he is. President Reagan will go down in history as the greatest president in the twentieth century, [in my opinion] there was only one Ronald Reagan. Many politicians are one thing to one group and something else to others. Not Reagan if he said it, it was as good as gold. His funeral was not a time of sadness but rather a time to celebrate. He was a man who celebrated every day of his life. America turned out, as they have never done before. I can see him now in heaven standing next to his favorite horse waiting for his boots to arrive so he could ride horseback the rest of the way to meet his maker. We lost Ray Charles. His music will live forever. I’m sure as good as he was at his craft God will forgive his indiscretions. I mourn the loss of our young men and women. I praise their sacrifice “There is no greater gift than to give one’s life so others may live”. The economy is on the rebound. Jobs are being created. There hasn’t been a terrorist attack on US soil since 9/11. The terrorists have nearly stopped fighting the American Army in Iraq and now concentrate on civilians. Never in our history have we engaged in a war that has been so brilliantly executed. Never has a war accomplished so much in such a short period of time with such little loss of life. This is due to our fighting forces as well as to those who have engineered our weapons of war to accomplish the job with extreme accuracy. The world has a debt to pay America. Will they, probably not. The reasons are for another article some time in the future. Remember this June, enjoy it, all in all it was pretty good. The next one may be a long time coming. ------------ About the Author: Ken Hughes is a retired businessman.
