Marriage Amendment
June 23, 2004

Congress is about to vote on the Marriage Amendment next month. This bill will not go to committee or sub-comittee, so the senators do not get the normal time to debate and solidify their vote. This stand is an issue that is going to define the U.S. culture.

What is wrong with letting a segment of the population get married?

This issue is a business issue. Companies insurance preminiums have steadily gone up over the past ten years. If you add more people to the need for a company to insure, that puts more cost to the company.

Marriage makes a larger family. Hence, a man marries a woman then adds her to his company insurance, increasing the cost to the company for benifits. A single individual does not bring a huge burden. A company only has to insure one individual.

This act of descrimination is more corporate discrimination and has nothing to do with the building of family. People should be allowed to have the life they want. If two individuals want marriage they should be able to enter into that bond.

As for the religious community getting involved, business men belong to the community. They want their profits to go up. If there is more cost to the business then profits will not go up. The money for the extra insurance will have to come from some where. Most of these men and women give to the churches, if cost to business goes up the donations that churches rely on come down.

Is it right to discriminate on the basis of the bottom line? Is it right to keep individuals apart and not have the benefits that the comapany offers to married couples?

Here is the answere-NO IT IS NOT RIGHT!

One solution could be that companies no longer offer the benefits. Another is that they pass more cost off on the employees. The congress needs time to debate these issues.
