June 23, 2004 In today's society the only people that are over looked are the rich and the richer, many peoples interest is only caught when the news of a super star hits the top, like the Michael Jackson case or the night at the super bowl's with Janet Jackson and Justin, or maybe even the mix up with J-lo and her on and off affairs. It is, after all the most interesting and heart breaking news ever to hit the newspapers, stations etc- well for once how about we talk about something that's really outgoing and actually heartbreaking. Although Canada is knowing for it's promising land, a land that people should and could feel free to run to and get away when their country is in trouble, a place in which people should feel free, no their limits and be able to enjoy life with the thoughts of happiness. Life is filled with surprise, unexpected turns and a whole lot of disappointment, but Canada is the country in which people should feel a little more relieve instead we are stuck with all of the following: homelessness, poverty, and high crimes. Although all of these are serious issues in society that needs to be dealt with right away, the one that catches my eyes the most is homelessness. Many people live on the streets, not because they woke up one day and decided that's the best thing to do, but because unfortunately they lost their jobs and couldn't afford everyday life. "Why not get a job" This is something that you would often hear people say. Well it's time that we put ourselves into their shoes and realize that it's not easy getting a job in today’s society, put it altogether and you might see that the end results are: Going without a home, selling drugs to provide for your kids, or even turning to other forms of money making. Take a walk down town and tell me what you see, a homeless man begging for cash, young kids stealing because they live on the streets and can't afford it. In many cases you could just turn your back and say "Hey, well that's their problem" what if you where stuck in that situation? It's often seen when watching TV that singers and actors are squandering money needlessly or even people with average wealth, people who are often seen buying fast food or cigarettes that could easily be avoided and money that could usefully be spent. If everyone was to take the same $10 or $8 out of their pocket in which they would use to buy cigarettes or fast food and put it together to help the homeless there would be no need for people to be waiting on the government and their never to come promises like a lot of things we would make a difference and life would be a whole lot better off. ------------ Email Shanique Stewart: FIRSTCHILD620@hotmail.com Tell a friend about this site! ------------ |
