My Life: A Pre-Review Review

By Max Burns
June 22, 2004

Let me start off by saying that I support Bill Clinton’s run for President in 2004. Wait, what? He’s not running for President again? Then why is he on television more than President Bush is? Don’t get me wrong, I like listening to Bill as much as the next Democrat, but this may just be a tad excessive, don’t you think?

Bill Clinton has been on Fox, CNN, MSNBC, BBC, local News 64, Good Morning America, Today, Later Today, 60 Minutes, ABC, CBS, and pretty much every place with a video camera and a link- up to the world. Why, you ask? What ground- breaking revelation has he come up with that he must share with all of us?

He’s selling his book.

If my agent helped me to get the kind of air advertising deal Bill Clinton has, I would guarantee my book would be doing as well as his. In fact, his book is doing so ungodly well that it’s on the Amazon.com Top Ten three times. That, my friends, is why I believe in miracles.

It’s not as if I fault the man for whoring his autobiography out to the world – after all, everyone is supposed to love capitalism, and what’s more capitalist than buying all the air time you can to sell as many books as you can? I would think all of this would run right in line with capitalist wet dreams.

No, the problem I have with all of this is that the book isn’t even that good for crying out loud!

The New York Times has criticized Clinton’s autobiography, calling it self-serving and dull. Well, what else did you expect? I never really heard any reviews of George H.W. Bush’s memoirs proudly declaring them to be a laugh-a-minute romp.

The AP news wires also criticized Clinton’s book, saying it focused too much on people only he knew, and not enough on the things people care about: sex, drugs and rock n’ roll. I’m torn on exactly what side to take.

Rest assured I will read Clinton’s book when I find time. At the rate my reading is going, that will not be any time soon. Part of me is thankful for that – if it’s the snooze-fest people are making it out to be, it might be on my “avoid” list. Yes, I, a noble Democrat, am avoiding Bill Clinton’s book.

Though this 950 page behemoth may be the last of its kind; the next Presidential autobiography will most likely be a picture book. Dubya dislikes all them pesk-ay words and phrasases in his books.
