Sometimes Ya Just Gotta Wonder

By Peter Pike
June 16, 2004

I’ve discovered that life is lame, boring, and outright stupid after hockey season ends. Even when there aren’t any hockey games being played during the season, it’s still possible to get on- line and chat with other hockey fans about how bad of a referee Kerry Fraser is and how many calls he has blown. But alas, all that is now over (much like the future of hockey), and so I have to do things that turn out to be even less productive in my life.

Which is why I watched the news last night. There, mostly by accident, I happened to see that John Kerry was making a campaign stop somewhere. I think it was in Ohio (state motto: Don’t Judge Us Just Because We Have Cleveland), but maybe it was Pakistan. In any case, none of the news networks I looked at actually (neither of them) bothered to air anything Kerry was saying, although they were nice enough to show live pictures while they talked about what he was saying. Yes, without actually playing what he was saying (except for a few sound bytes previously recorded at a previous stop) the networks managed to report all the contents of Kerry’s live speech. It almost makes me feel bad for Kerry. But it really makes me feel bad for the voters.

June has been a tough month for Kerry. First Reagan died, and Kerry had to pretend that he actually liked the former president, ignoring previous statements he made last year, such as: “I'm proud that I stood against Ronald Reagan, not with him." Now, Kerry has less than a week remaining before Bill Clinton storms into the media spotlight that has never left him and takes even more attention away from Kerry by releasing the first ever autobiography put into the libraries “Adult Fiction” section. And finally, June is going to close with the transfer of Iraqi sovereignty to the new government in Iraq, which can only help to diffuse part of the “Iraq problem” for George W. Bush (a problem which seem to only exist on the American Left, as most of Iraq is quite pleased with Bush—just ask a Kurd).

So what is Kerry going to do? He’s going to shift focus to the economy. Right when we get reports about how gas prices are falling back down below $2 per gallon, tax-cuts are kicking the economy up well above expectation, and a million jobs have been added in the past year.

One has to wonder if now the networks, in addition to not airing audio, will soon simply post a black screen so they can inform us that Kerry is now standing at a podium while delivering a speech that we can neither hear nor see. But I suppose that’s what happens when they give the people what they want....
