Mike Romer

Goodbye, Mr. President
June 12, 2004

The United States….no, make that The World lost a good man this week….make that a Great man, a true American who brought pride back to America and Americans after years of low morale and mismanaging by Jimmy Carter and the era of Billy Beer and his drunken speeches at his gas station, not to forget his 'consulting; fees collected from our loyal friend, Muammar Abu Minyar al- QADHAFI, aka, Daffy Kadaffy.

The man I'm referring to of course is President Ronald Wilson Reagan, 40th President of the United States.

This man took control of this nation when there were double digit inflation, interest rates were soaring upwards to 20% and sometimes higher, the military was in shambles, Iran held American hostages for 444 days, the Soviet Union was still a viable threat to every citizen of the United States, and the general population were at the lowest morale of recent history.

President Reagan took this situation and turned it all around, with nothing more than common sense, and policies that surely irked a lot of people, but they eventually reaped the efforts of President Reagan's efforts. Interest rates dropped, people were able to afford to buy homes, the real estate market took a mighty upswing. Inflation dropped and ordinary people were able to afford to buy a quart of milk or gallon of gasoline without having to go to a bank to obtain a loan.

Then, he soon let the Soviets know that they weren't against a killer rabbit fearing President such as Jimmy Carter. They were made aware that the man holding the reins of this nation was a tough old leathery cowboy, who if pushed, would react the way Billy the Kid or Jesse James would, he'd draw first and let the chips and/or bodies fall where they may.

I have been watching the televised procedures of his funeral since he died. I have to say that the Military Honor Guards outdid themselves in appearance and Military protocol. They were dressed in the formal dress uniforms, not a wrinkle to be seen anywhere. All shoes were polished to a glossed shine, brass polished and all other things in their proper places. Their movements were executed with razor sharp precision.

Having expressed my opinions of that subject, I have to wonder what thoughts were running through their minds as they observed the public viewers that came in droves to see President Reagan's coffin.

I realize that it is hot where they were, but most of the public shown on television were dressed as though they were going to Disneyland or some such other amusement park. Shorts and tee shirts seemed the order of the day; both in California and Washington DC. These people came to supposedly honor and bid farewell to a man who held the Oval Office in such high esteem, that he would not enter the office without being dressed in a suit and tie. In my opinion, these people could have at least dressed like they were going to a funeral instead of a day at the beach. I admit, I wasn't able to go to any of the viewings, even though Washington isn't all that far from where I live, but if I were able to, I'd have dressed in a suit and tie even in the heat. My goal would have been to show my respect to the man, not just to be able to say: "I was there". If you are going to take the time to make the trip, at least show the proper respect due by dressing the role. If not a suit or dress, than at least a collared shirt and slacks or a dressy outfit for the ladies.

Now, on to the Washington National Cathedral. The featured eulogies were eloquent in their views and honors of President Reagan, the seated guests acted with class and dignity. That is, except for two. These two slugs slept through the ceremony it seems, either that or she was thinking of another female for company and he was probably thinking of the menu at the nearest Hooters. And it was probably the first time they slept together in 20 plus years. I'm referring to Bill and Hillary Clintoon. The darling of the left coast and the Democratic party. These two couldn't garner enough class to at least try to look interested and try to honor one of the greatest Presidents in the 20th century. I don't care what your political affiliation is, when a President dies, show respect for the office he held, even if you didn't like the man. Billy and Hilly, next time a former President dies, stay away or mail in your phony condolences, ok? Bill's funeral won't be hard to plan, in fact I think it's already plotted out. It will probably be held on the volleyball court at the nearest nudist camp, with plenty of overweight women employed as professional wailers. I'm finished with the two most shameful people in American politics.

Now, on to Simi Valley, California. There was held one of the most moving ceremonies I have ever witnessed. The statements by the Reagan children were moving, sincere, yet with a touch of humor.

Mrs Reagan; obviously under a lot of strain, showed more courage than most people could under similar circumstances.

To end this column, all I can say is:

GOODBYE MR PRESIDENT, YOU WERE GREAT IN LIFE AND WILL BE MISSED VERY MUCH.

REST IN PEACE
