June 11, 2004 I heard the enquiry on the torture of Iraqi prisoners on the radio. If following the Geneva conventions will protect US POW from torture why has it become almost a tradition for non westerners to torture them. The Geneva conventions didn’t help John McCain, neither did they help thousands of other US and allied service men since the beginning of WWII. And I don’t seem to remember the UN or even the ACLU for that matter complaining about the treatment of US POWs in Viet Nam. But then I guess, according to the media, being told that US POWs were a bunch of liars by Jane Fonda covers the matter The Geneva conventions are obsolete as the majority of countries (outside Europe, Australia etc.) do not follow them. It is of no comfort to a soldier under going torture to know that his torturers and their friends will not have to under go the same treatment as they are protected by the Geneva conventions. ------------ About the author Mike Haran: I write articles for military and hobby publications.
