July 30, 2004 The cameras panning the anticipatory and all- trusting faces at the Democrat convention, waiting for John Kerry to speak, reminded me of a scene from “Independence Day”; the one where a group of people was waiting excitedly and confidently on the roof of a high rise to welcome the alien visitors. That was just before the aliens burned them to death along with the city. Shortly, thereafter, John F. Kerry began his speech I think it important, once again, to remind myself and others about a small portion of Kerry’s on-the-record actions. Based upon intelligence from the CIA and intelligence from other countries around the world, John Kerry voted to go to war with Iraq. Through 2003 and into the first part of 2004 he said he supported his and the President’s decision. Then, Kerry (in a flip-flop position antithetical to his first “yea” vote) voted against the $87 billion that would, in great part, fund our troops in Iraq. So, he was “for” the war (sort of) but, was effectively telling our sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, husbands and wives who were prosecuting the war: “You’re on your own.” Then, after Kerry became the front-runner in the Democrat presidential candidate race (after Howard Dean had imploded), he announced that he was now “against the war”. After all, Kerry needed Dean’s leftist anti-war anarchistic base to vote for him and he couldn’t do that without, at least, the pretense of a “Dean-like demeanor”; without the scream. He flipped. Apparently, he got most of them (unfortunately, leftist dems tend to be substantially “dimmer” than others in their party). So, with a new addition to his base and the trademark dour look on his face, he proceeded to further attack Americans…you know the Americans who still maintain some (dare I say it) “traditional values”; those values that built and have maintained our country. No matter to Mr. Kerry. He was on a roll! Mr. Kerry was, now, the “presumed Democrat presidential candidate” and he knew he was “hot”. Besides, if the polls showed that too many voters didn’t like his extreme leftist stance (that is…the “real” John Kerry), he could always “flop” back. No one in his party would pay much attention, as it had happened so many times before. Anyway, they expected it from him. His inconsistency WAS his consistency. Yeah, that’s the ticket! Yes…he had all of his bases nicely covered and he could comfortably enjoy the peanut butter sandwich his attendant had prepared for him. Besides, he was even smiling once in awhile. That should help him get votes from the ones who wanted a “more positive and upbeat” candidate. All was well. Then, the most recent polls came out and he had to switch again. No problem. As throughout most of his political life, switching positions would be easy. The next and all-important step, for John Kerry, was last night’s speech. True to form, he said he’s no longer anti-war…well not entirely and not if the polls don’t like the “new and improved Kerry”…and has now (in order to better his chances of winning the election) decided to pretend he’s “strong and decisive against terrorism” and will “be a commander-in-chief who will never mislead us into war.” Additional drivel included “I will never go to war when I want to only when we have to” and “I defended this country as a young man and I’ll defend it as president.” First of all, we now only go to war when we have to. Based upon the intelligence of the entire world, it was deemed necessary to go to war with Iraq. Second, the only sense he makes in the “defended the country” statement (again endlessly referencing his 4 month stint in Viet Nam) is that a president, also, has cameras following him. In other words, Mr. Kerry has flopped…yet again. This time (and only as of this writing), it’s the biggest flop of his life. Or, is it? I still can’t figure out if he plans to defend the country or take the French position of abandoning and running. No wonder a large portion of his base has been ranting, raving and throwing all manner of foul-smelling things outside the halls of the Boston’s Democrat Convention center. Kerry’s antics would (and do) drive anyone insane! After Mr. Kerry’s speech, I find that still have myriad questions. Can the United States of America really afford an inconsistent crazy- maker as President? Can we allow ourselves a President who already has an established record of no real decision making ability (or…at the very least…one whose decisions never stick for long)? Do we really want someone who hired filmmakers to follow him around (while he was conducting his “4 month Viet Nam Hero Tour”) to create “reenactments” [AKA reinventions] of his “hero-like stance in battle”; considering these battle or battles may never have taken place? Holy Smokes! The very continued existence of the United States is at stake. Please get a grip on your collective consciences, if not your sanity. The answer to electing Kerry to anything again, let alone the Presidency of the United States, has to be a resounding “NO”! ------------ About the author: Sher Zieve has a degree in Journalism, appeared on the CBS program "Mysteries of the Millenium", has been included in "Who's Who in the West", "Who's Who in the US" and "Who's Who in Entertainment".
