John Edwards vs. The Truth

By Sher Zieve
July 29, 2004

After the obligatory “thank yous” and “wasn’t my wife great?” comments, VP candidate John Edwards began his warnings to the faithful. “Negative attacks, on John Kerry,” he said. ”What’s coming in the weeks to come are more negative attacks.” If I had just read his comments in print, rather than hearing them from the horse’s mouth, so to speak, I would have though he was talking about the democrat strategy. But…no. He was warning the base about the mean ol’ Republicans.

Hold it, Mr. Edwards. I have been following this election year diatribe, for quite awhile and from both sides. The Republicans haven’t had to resort to calling Mr. Kerry a “thug” (as your supporters called President Bush) or to using sexual innuendos regarding his name (as your supporters did). You and John Kerry laughed at those comments. Remember? Do you, also, remember how one of your party leaders (Al Gore) called the Republicans “brown shirts”, in an unmistakable reference to Adolph Hitler? Now THAT, Sir, is negative. Instead, President Bush’s supporters have been able to actually use facts, as Mr. Kerry [himself] talks about how he “committed atrocities” in his 4 month Viet Nam tour. Yes, it’s on video tape. I guess the Vietnamese are lucky John Kerry wasn’t in- country any longer than he was.

The Republicans have brought up and used Mr. Kerry’s actual/on-record Senate voting record, in their ads. Of course, the dems call that “negative”. When Republicans use documented facts and Kerry’s own words and actions in their political ads, they are called “negative” by democrats. The facts support that John Kerry IS negative. However, when the dems use unfounded and less-than- credible comments (AKA outright lies) about President Bush, these comments are considered fair game. The “mainstream press”, of course, gave Edward’s speech the expected and anticipates spin. On their respective websites, the NY Times headline is: “Edwards, Hailing Kerry, Says ‘Hope Is on the Way’, the LA Times shows: Edwards Speech Builds Case for ‘Politics of Hope’ and the Washington Post touts: Edwards Tells Democrats ‘Hope is on the Way’. Hope for what? What I heard from Edwards own mouth (his saying the democrats would “handle everything” from “ensuring those who work full time will not live in poverty” to “destroying terrorism”), it was perfectly clear that taxes will go up…UP… UP. Edwards even used President Bush’s words in telling the Dem Loyals that he and Kerry will ‘seek and destroy’ the terrorists. Give me a break. President Bush has and is, already, doing that quite effectively.

Try as he did to convince Americans that the Kerry-Edwards team would “be better than Bush”, none of it made much sense; when I got past the rallying cries and actually listened to what he was saying. Despite Edwards’ attempts to sound strong (like President Bush) his speech was the same old “take from the rich and give to the poor” mantra. However, I seriously doubt that means that Edwards and Kerry will give even one dollar of their own respective and vast fortunes to anyone but, themselves. No. They will tax the rest of us for that.
