The Democratic Convention's First Night Afterglow

By Sher Zieve
July 27, 2004

The first night of the Democrat’s convention has ended but, the warm afterglow continues. Using phrases like “When the former president took the stage, delegates jumped up, screamed, applauded and waved placards” and “The Navy veteran campaigned in Florida on Monday and was appearing in the Navy town of Norfolk, Va., on Tuesday, where he was calling for the Sept. 11 commission to continue working past its scheduled end date of Aug. 26 to ensure recommended reforms are put in place”, AP’s Summerville is telling us that John Kerry is already in charge. Balz at the Washington Post continues the PR love-fest campaign by telling us “Convention opens with a rallying cry to convert bitterness into fresh energy aimed at electing Kerry and Edwards” and the NY Times proclaims “Clintons Return as Royalty”. The “mainstream press” (the same press that buried the Sandy Berger document-stuffing scandal and all portions of the 9/11 Commission’s report vindicating President Bush) is as effusive as a new bride waiting for another night of unbridled passion.

Despite its base of anti-war, anti-God and anti- virtually everything clamoring outside the Democrat convention halls, the dems inside work on reinventing their party as one of “moderation”. Moderation? Wasn’t it just a week or so ago that Kerry and Edwards were laughing with Whoopi Goldberg and the rest of the Hollywood establishment, at Radio City Music Hall, when words like “thug” were thrown around in reference to President Bush and sexual innuendo regarding his name were used? However, in true Kerry fashion, the flip-flopping continues; this time it is an extreme makeover of the Democrat party. Kerry has proclaimed that angry Bush-bashing (so popular with democrats for months leading up to their convention) will not be tolerated in Boston…at least until after this coming Friday. Kerry has decided to put his, recent, anti-war sentiments aside in favor of “the new and more moderate Kerry”. Kerry continues to use his “4 month Viet Nam Hero tour” as one of his selling points and has, apparently, decided to forego his usually dour demeanor in favor of the “new” upbeat, positive and smiley-faced candidate. I don’t know about you but, my head’s spinning trying to keep up with these constant reversals. If there were office betting pools set up, to guess Kerry’s next position on anything, I doubt anyone would win.

When Al Gore stepped up to the podium, I’m sure all of the delegates were salivating for a continuation of his ranting “He played on our fears” speech. Unfortunately for them (due to Kerry’s dictate of “tone it down”), Mr. Gore was (for Gore) relatively calm. The only time Gore received any real and gleeful reaction from the crowd was when he finally began to take shots at the president. He just can’t help himself. I found Gore’s “mild-mannered speech” almost frightening. Has he flip-flopped, too? In fact, even the DNC appears to have followed Kerry’s lead. The Democrat platform closely follows and even emulates the platform of the Bush administration. For, at least, the moment the Democrat party has decided to “change”, in order to win the election. The DNC has flip- flopped on its policies, too. But, never fear… it will flop back again. Kerry must, now, truly be in charge of the Democrat party. Scary.
