Kofi Annan Fiddles While People Die
July 22, 2004

I have never been a fan of the United Nations. A glorified debating society where even the most oppresive and totalitarian regimes can have a seat to speak on human rights and democracy. All talk, no action.

Talk is cheap, action isn't. Or to use another cliche: actions speak louder than words. 26 million people in Afghanistan and another 26 million in Iraq were not freed by UN rhetoric, they were freed by action. Today we have another urgent situation requiring action.

Sudan is not just a hmuanitarian crisis it is a front on the war against islamofascism. The government of Khartoum is both religously intolerant and racist. Wishing to wipe out non arabs and non muslims it has launched a civil war in the south, that seems to be coming to an end. Now however in the Dafur region the islamist regime is sending paramiltary forces to kill off the black muslim population.

Ten years ago 500,000 people were slaughtered in Rwanda while the world did nothing. Some on the left and on the right say that we have no interests involved and that we are not the worlds police. All true. We have no material interests involved and it would be physically impossible for us to police the world. But I think that anytime we can save lives we should. Sparing thoudands, and maybe more is in our interests. No good comes from senseless slaughter. We have tens of thousands dead already how many more need to die before we are shamed into action?

Acting in the Sudan would accomplish two things at once. It would save thoudsands of people from dying. It would also get rid of an islamist regime that is friendly territory for terrorists. Bin Laden used Sudan as a safe haven until he got a better offer from the taliban. The government of Khartoum is long on lies and short on everything else. They claim they have no ties to terrorism. They make that claim because they don't want to hear regime change mentioned in the same sentence as their country, they also claim they are stopping these militias. Both are lies.

In order for evil to succeed all that is required is inaction on the part of good men and women. Kofi Annan and his little debating society can sit in New York and think they are important by threatening sanctions or whatever they think appropriate. We need to act. A small force in Darfur would stop the violence. Lets not have another genocide.
