July 22, 2004 The Sandy Berger saga continues and it is reported that Mr. Berger persuaded monitors to break protocol and leave the room where he was reviewing code-word classified documents while in the underground archives vault. So he could privately (although he was apparently observed) stuff the documents down his pants? Berger told his monitors that he needed to make “private phone calls”. Any guess as to whom he was calling? These same monitors were, ostensibly, the individuals who observed Berger stuffing hand-written notes in his clothing. Making notes on secret files and taking them without special permission is prohibited. But, still, Mr. Berger got away with it. As has become customary, Dems get away with things that Republicans never would. Mr. Berger also aroused suspicion, when he took an inordinate number of “bathroom breaks”. I wonder if, after Mr. Berger’s “breaks”, the National Archives men’s room experienced any plumbing problems. I’d like to know if there were any commode back- ups after he exited the bathroom. Maybe the next story will be that Berger has bladder problems. Berger reviewed classified documents in the National Archives in (at least) September and October 2003. It is reported that, after his September visit, the Archives’ employees became convinced that documents Berger was reviewing (both originals and Berger’s notes) had gone missing. Therefore, during Berger’s 2 October visit, the documents were specially coded; to determine if these would go missing also. Apparently, they did. Berger, of course, said that he “had no idea documents were missing”. Does Mr. Berger have some sort of inexplicable condition that is causing [these] profound memory lapses? I doubt this explanation would fly if he were a Republican. Should this be proven in a court of law, this is criminal behavior at the highest level. But, a troubling question remains. If he was being observed, why were the documents allowed to be removed in the first place? The indication appears to be that the documents were carefully selected. If so, this was a carefully planned and executed effort by a former National Security Advisor. At the very least, it doesn’t pass any rational smell test. My continuing question is “Will dems continue to be given a pass and allowed get away with criminal behavior (or the appearance thereof) whenever they decide it’s necessary?” Our major “mainstream liberal media” still continues to bury this story in its back pages. As a final note, Lanny Breuer (Berger’s attorney) denied Berger hid papers in his socks. But, he said nothing about Berger’s pants.
