The Left's Lack of Humor [Schwarzenegger And Liberal Girlie-Men]
July 20, 2004

What follows is a paragraph by paragraph critique of Claxton Graham's recent article about the Schwarzenegger flap in California over the "girlie men" remark.

This die-hard liberal, who has seen the remarks several times on that liberal bastion of 24/7 news, CNN, found the governor’s remarks funny, self-effacing, and a good way to diffuse very stressful situation. Anyone who hasn’t been living in a cave the last quarter-century could clearly see that Schwarzenegger wasn’t trying to raise the ire of women or gays with his comments. He’s trying to get the Democrats riled up, and at the same time, he was having fun with the old Hanz and Franz bit from “Saturday Night Live”.

An absolutely correct assessment of the remarks by the Governor. Why doesn't the liberal media see it, too?

The Democrats may not be happy about the governor’s comments, but they have to understand the spirit with which they were intended. Yes, they were meant to stir action, and yes they were meant to challenge. But they weren’t mean-spirited insults to their manhood or to the lifestyles of homosexuals. It was clearly tongue-in-cheek, played for laughs and catcalls. And it had the desired effect.

To the liberal media and my Democratic friends out in California, I say have a good laugh about all this, quit taking yourselves so seriously and move on to a real news story. And to the folks at Fox News Channel—including closet liberal Bill O’Reilly—quit harassing the liberal media and my Democratic friends out in California for taking themselves so seriously, laugh with them, and move on to a real news story.

I agree with almost everything that Mr. Graham has posted in this piece. I say "almost" because Bill O'Reilly is NOT, by any stretch of the imagination, "a closet liberal."

The left--and in particular, the California left--has a VERY convenient sense of outrage, it seems. Whoopi Goldberg makes crude remarks about the President's name. People like Alec Baldwin and Barbara Streisand call him a criminal or a Nazi (in all seriousness) and Californians are silent. Governor Schwarzenegger makes an innocent remark about the Democrats in the legislature not having the guts to stand up to the special interests in whose thrall all of 'em are held, and all hell breaks loose!

It's little wonder California is known as the "Land of Fruits and Nuts." A vocal minority in the homosexual community seems to actually RUN politics out there (along with the NEA, trial lawyers, and Hollywood nut-jobs--if that's not redundant.)

If it weren't for their 50+ electoral votes, I'd suggest that the President just forget 'em and concentrate on winning the same States he won in 2000. These people ARE nutso.
