George W. Bush Has Been A Liberal, Yet Democrats Aren't Happy [Ideology Or Power?]
July 20, 2004

Some people think politics is a conflict of ideas, a battle of ideologies. Perhaps it used to be, but it isn't anymore.

If it were ideologies and ideas, the Democrats would have been happy with the increased federal spending on the education budget, as that sermon was written by Brother Teddy Kennedy.

If it were growth of government that made Democrats happy, they would have been overjoyed about the federalization of the airport security screeners pushed by Brother Tommy Daschle.

If it were relieving the oppressed and promoting freedom and democracy, the Democrats would be cheering the liberation of Iraq. I seem to recall they pushed for intervention in Haiti and Bosnia.

If they actually wanted job growth and improvement in the economy, they would applaud the success of the tax cuts.

If it isn't getting policies implemented, i.e., ideas and ideology, what is it? One can certainly say that, in the main, Bush has tried to be accommodating, has tried to get along with Democrats, has spent money and behaved in most ways just like a Democrat. What is it?

It is simply that it is Bush implementing thepolicies, not them! They are not the ones in power! They don't get the perks of power that they used to have and which they believed were their god-given--whoops!--natural rights. They ain't the majority no more! They will gripe about policies which, if pushed by a fellow Democrat, they would be lauding to high heaven-- whoops!--to the sky.

The reason they hate Bush is not that he's doing things they wouldn't do, but that he's the one doing the things! They hate him because he has the power they think is theirs.

If one judged objectively, one would have to conclude that Bush was a revolutionary liberal, which should make Democrats happy. That they aren't happy demonstrates that it is just virulent anger over being out of power that galls them.
