George W. Bush Is Finally Losing Support
July 19, 2004

According to a recent survey, 51% of American population believes it was not right to start the Iraq war. At last, I would like to say, the Americans wake up and realise their government has been misleading them for almost three years about the situation in Iraq. Before, during and after the war. George Bush´s popularity is now at some 44%, less than John Kerry´s 49%. George W. is going to face difficult months. Will he win the elections in the end? If it would be up to me, I hope not.

The main thing I strongly oppose to is his isolationist policy. When will he learn that his ideas of how the world should look like are not shared by hundreds of millions of people all over the world? And that he therefore should be more open to other opinions than his own? Never, I´m afraid. This has not only got to do with the war against terrorism, although it remains the most explicit example. Last week, we saw another proof of Bush´s rubbing the world up the wrong way.

At the AIDS conference in Bangkok last week, the representatives of Bush´s government were trying to convince the rest of the world that abstinence is the best way to fight AIDS. I admit, under perfect circumstances this is the best method. But Mr. Bush, we are not living in a world that knows perfect circumstances. Neither as far as (inter)national security is concerned (an excuse you often use to violate international human rights legislation. Something you seem to detest strongly all the same) nor as far as global health issues are concerned. People travel, people meet each other and yes people sometimes do have sexual intercourse with other people who are not their legal man or wife. Out of their free will or for money (I let out the compulsory sexual contacts. Neither education about the use of condoms nor abstinence are appropriate in these sad cases). They are not supposed to do this when they do have a partner of their own. I know, they mostly know, however they still do. Not keep on telling them they must use a condom in such cases is playing with death. And that´s what abstinence as encouraged by the roman catholic church and Mr. Bush leads to. All scientists say so. The facts and figures shot it. Even some roman catholic priests do not follow the official rules of their own church because of what they see in practice every day, working in African or Asian countries with many AIDS victims! But George Bush remains holding on to his stubborn policy of abstinence and gets angry when other governments don´t follow his line.

Who will win the American elections? I´ve said it many times before and say it again now. I don´t think John Kerry is the perfect president in advance. Who is? But I believe everything is better than another four years of Bush administration. Security, health, environment, international co-operation. All these subjects would profit. Think of it when all you American people are going to vote in November.
