July 12, 2004 Remember that commercial that said, "My dog's better than your dog...my dog's better than yours....my dog's better 'cause he eats....My dog's better than yours...." If you remember that, you are probably close to my age. But this advertisement could have many meanings besides just boasting about who has the best dog, don't you think? Everyone is in competition. I do think my dog is better than everyone else's, especially the one I have right now. I've had dogs my entire life. The first one was named Poco and he was a Boxer. Boxer's are sweet, kind and hardly ever bark, at least that one didn't. His face was all pushed in, but it just made you feel sorry for him. I loved him dearly. The next one was named Buff. He was a combination of a German shepherd and Beagle. Actually, that wasn't that attractive. He had a shepherd face and a beagle body. And he was mean. He bit about 10 different people. I think it was from spending too much time with my mean parents. And you've read about them before. But I loved him dearly. The next one, named Jeri, was a purebred German Shepherd. He was gorgeous, but also really, really mean. He didn't like anyone at all except for me. That made having friends awfully difficult. But I loved him dearly, anyway. Now I have Timber, he's an Alaskan Malamute and wolf combo. He really is the best dog ever! He's absolutely beautiful. People actually stop me whenever he's with me, either in the car or as he's being walked, to comment on how pretty he is, and he has the perfect temperament to match. But the topic is: My dog's better than yours. So, this points to many issues. Such as, back to that political season we're in now....My candidate is better, smarter, stronger and just a nicer person than yours! My candidate cares about people, wants to help people, doesn't want to be a bully, wants the world to be safe and peaceful, and minds his own business when it comes to people's individual rights, likes and dislikes. My candidate cares about health and keeping people healthy, my candidate cares about helping the rich stay rich and helping the less-rich at least find a way to pay the bills, so they can be proud and not stand on the street corner with a cup, begging. My candidate doesn't want people to bomb each other just because others don't have the same religious beliefs. One can also say: My kid's smarter than your kid, better looking than your kid, a better person than your kid, whereas, the other kids must be dumb and ugly. Who is the judge? Why must one be compared to the other? Since we can't compromise on any subject, we must pick one or the other. Then one group of people remains happy, the other remains unhappy. But, we can't all look, act and think the same, otherwise we'd be robots.... Can anyone solve this dilemma? All of my dogs have been different, just like the different political candidates, but there have also been some similarities. I think moving too far in one direction or the other might be the problem today. ------------ About the author: Gail Fonda wants you to put more thought into who you like and dislike from now on and into the future and what the long-term effects of your actions are.
