If You Knew
July 12, 2004

Let’s just say you think you’re sick. Really, really sick. Let’s just say for the sake of this discussion, that you think you’re going to die.

No, I don’t mean in twenty or forty years. Now or at least very soon. In the next few months, you know you’re going to die. What would you do to get ready?

Would you rehearse how to act? Resigned? Or would you act panic-stricken? Or would you just do whatever comes into your head? Would you want to work it out so it wouldn’t hurt your family too much? Or would you want their sympathy and understanding? What if too much sentiment made you feel worse? And what if you were embarrassed to be too emotional?

Man, these are hard questions. What would you do with your personal stuff? Would you just give it away while you were alive? Or let them fight over it after you’re gone? Worse, what if it meant nothing to another single person on the planet and nobody wanted it? Like if your priceless possessions were stuff that only mattered to YOU?

Would you leave advice so others could get in touch with you if they wanted and if you could respond, like Houdini? Would you leave the world a message of peace or of struggle? Would you say to them (anyone and everyone) fight like heck for every day? Or would you say, I’ve had what I’ve had and I’m ready to go.

So then what would you think? Would you go to meet God? Or would you settle peacefully into Mother Earth? Be part of Father Time? Expect to see your eulogy on a billboard?

So I think about it now and then. Maybe I'm just a moody writer.
