July 9, 2004 Why do politicians sometimes make themselves look idiotic while performing publicity stunts? One has to assume that they are intelligent and subject to embarrassment. Or maybe they’re not. Maybe it is just part of the job to sometimes look stupid just as a clown at a children’s birthday party also looks stupid and then afterwards shows no awkwardness in front of friends and relatives. How did George Bush feel, for example, after that aircraft carrier stunt and the subsequent enactment of the second part of Iraq II? Didn’t he know that you can’t just walk in and occupy an Arab country and nothing happens. He could have asked the British, the French or the Israeli’s. These embarrassments are not confined to the Republican Party. In fact the Democrats seem to be tied to idiotic scenes even more so than do the Republicans. Who can forget Bill Clinton’s cabinet all showered and dressed in their Sunday best lining up in front of the TV cameras and stating that they believed their boss one hundred percent when he stated that he was telling the truth regarding 'That Woman' or when the ten dwarfs running for the Democratic nomination for President told all the world who their favorite pop artists were. Does any one really believe that a person intelligent enough to run for the position of leader of the most powerful country ever known to man can really relate to such stuff as spews out over car radios or portable CD players. And what about John Kerry and his war record. Would you really want it known that you had ordered your crew on a stunt where you took the Swift Boat right into a Viet Gong fire team. That it did not end in tragedy was due to the fact that the enemy was so surprised that they failed to readjust their sights is no reason for the Democrats to trumpet the stunt around. I bet the USMC did not in the light of this action recommend it to other Swift Boat crews. History is full of such acts which worked once. That Kerry served only four months in Vietnam is strange and then maybe not so strange when you think about it. These stunts are for the benefit of the US voters and these are the people the rest of the world should be worried about, not the US Army, Big business or even the US Media. How for example must an Icelander feel knowing that the fate of his country is indirectly in the hands of those who either spend their lives watching people fight for a piece of leather or who are educated by those slightly mad or bordering just this side of criminal insanity? What are you supposed to feel for instance when you see hundreds of people with lamb like expressions on their faces being carted away by police for blocking traffic, people who spend much of their time walking in a circle carrying signs chanting ‘hey hey, ho, ho and whatever’, or who cause legislation to be enacted limiting the emissions of CFC’s and then the next year when the hole in the ozone layer, due to unrelated causes, subsides, giving themselves a pat on the back, having a say in the running of the country. Politicians are playing to an audience and it is a deadly game for as the audience gets what it wants it slowly kills itself off, again voting for politicians who blame those who do not vote for them for their problems, thus creating an ever increasing spiral. The only result can be their defeat in the long term. In the short term they enact more and more restrictive legislation bringing legal actions to those who oppose them disguising it with civil rights. That the US is becoming increasingly polarized is not due to the fact that George Bush likes country and western and does not smoke weed. It is more due to the fact that those espousing a failed social system are becoming ever more desperate. ------------ About the author Mike Haran: I write articles for military and hobby publications.
