July 7, 2004 Hey Uncle Ken - Was wondering what happened to you. Great articles you write for UK and thank you for the kind words. Now, here are some continuing words from the "bleeding heart liberal" on the War in the Middle East. I still maintain as far as the war in Iraq goes, Bush went after the wrong target. He should have finished the war in Afghanistan and got Bin Laden, first, then tackle Hussein and Iraq. What he did was give bin Laden time to regroup his army after losing 19 of his finest warriors during the 9/11 attacks. The only good thing about the bin Laden strategy is when his boys go for the kill, they also kill themselves. The odds would say “Pretty soon no more Taliban!” But, can we afford to wait that long? The final solution is death to all terrorists. Just getting Osama is not good enough, anymore. Each and everyone of them is going to have to go before we can maintain any kind of peace between the Free World and the Middle East. Hey, that is what they are trying to do to us. It’s THEM vs US. Right? Now, there are more of us than them and let's keep it that way. There is no peaceful co-existence in sight. It wasn't that way with Saddam Hussein and Iraq, was it? But it sure is, now. I have been doing very little writing lately other than editing for the Native Unity column - had more than a 1000 visitors last month. I have the children's book and the novel where I want them - in place. I have done all I can with them so I'm leaving them up to fate - they'll either sell or they won’t. I have two new charges that are taking up my time. Oscar and Felix, and we go swimming every afternoon in the big pool. "Oh, how nice! Grandchildren, you say.” No, they are my red-eared water turtles. Oscar was given to me by a friend who had a friend, who had a friend, etc. and I got Felix from the pet store to keep Oscar company. Water turtles are not exactly at home on the Arizona desert, so I have spent a great deal of time, energy and some hard-earned money to make them feel comfortable. I started off with a 5 foot, 10 inch plastic kiddie pool, positioned it under the filtering shade trees and half-filled it with water. Added some floating greens - romaine lettuce, kale, mustard greens - for shade and food, and put a basking area in the middle. When I discovered I was going to have empty the pool every day to keep it half-way clean, I invested in one pond filter, then another and with a skimmer can keep most of the debris to a minimum and maintain a fairly clean pond. They like murky water, anyway. Yesterday, lazy me discovered I could take a pond filter, which also acts as a fountain, and position it so water can shoot to the outside of the pool and also water the tangerine tree. When the pool is half drained, I can refill it with fresh water. Voila! Oscar and Felix have a somewhat maintenance free, comfortable living environment in the middle of the Arizona-Sonora Desert. They get their supply of greens, pet store pellets plus chicken, cat fish nuggets and other fruit and veggies and daily exercise in the big cement pond. What more could a pair of red-ears ask for?. Oh yes, fall hibernation, but we will worry about that in October. What do I think about the Kerry-Edwards ticket?. Way to go, guys!!!! Ken, drop me a line when you get a free moment. ------------ About the author: Bobbie Hart O’Neill is a retired print media journalist, CSU-Sacramento, ’74, with 40 years experience in the field.
