Obese America

By Gail Fonda

How did everyone get so fat? I don't understand it. Food tastes good but you can only eat so much, right?! I've always been the opposite of most people who've enjoyed eating. As a kid, I ate as litttle as possible because my stomach was always upset. Some people have actually told me I am lucky because of that.

About 10 years ago my stomach was more upset than usual. I had to have that awful test where the put you in a twilight sleep and put a tube down your throat into your stomach to find out what's going on. I found out I have acid reflux disease and a hiatal hernia. The severe nausea from that is almost unbearable. When I questioned my doctor, he said I was probably born with this, but it didn't effect me until later in life. Lucky me.

It took me three years to adapt to the medication, which is Prevacid. I have quite a few other health issues, but I want to stay on the stomach and eating problems for the moment. As a kid, I had cereal, orange and coffee for breakfast. For lunch I had a peanut butter sandwich with chocolate milk, and for dinner, my mother, unfortunately served the same thing all the time. Monday was hamburgers, Tuesday roast beef, Wednesday steak, Thursday some type of fish, and Friday was always chicken. But on my own I changed this diet.

For a number of years I've been eating either a bran muffin or cereal with bran for breakfast and coffee. I can't have any juice because of the acid. For lunch I have an apple and low-fat yogurt. For dinner I have chicken, fish (no shellfish) or turkey. I don't eat anything from a cow anymore, and I've been doing that for about 20 years now. I use soy milk in my cereal and coffee.

I never eat potato chips or junk food. I should say I occasionally have a cookie or cake, but only for a special occasion, and it's never several cookies or several pieces of cake. Because I am taking several medications that can upset my stomach, I have low-fat yogurt ice cream with my pills, and this also helps me get some calcium. I add Tums each night, in addition to the Prevacid, which doesn't help 100%.\

I exercise six times a week. I take spinning classes (stationery bicycle), aerobic classes and step classes, and I switch around so I won't get bored. I am not overweight. I do try to consciously think of what I am eating and where it will end up if I eat too much, which is hips and thighs. Why is that so hard to understand? It seems to me it's only common sense.

Whatever you eat, it goes through your body and does things. Some of it is nutrients you need to survive. Some of it is eliminated. A LOT of it remains and turns into that extra stuff called fat deposits. If you sit and eat and do nothing, you have to know it's going to end up on places you don't want it to be. So I take a few bites and put the rest away.

I think overweight Americans must have something else really serious going on in their heads other than being hungry. I don't think anyone can be that hungry. They must be insecure, or miserable or have some other serious issues going on in their heads to cause this constant eating. I think so much money is wasted on diets. Why don't they concentrate on where this hunger is coming from? It can't possibly by HUNGER.

If you look in the mirror and you aren't happy with what you see, there are ways to work on that. It's only common sense.
