Aug 31, 2004 The Republicans dug through their barrel of castaways and derelicts and dug out of the waste a character by the name of Alan Keyes and tried to polish him up to make him a decent looking candidate to run against Barak Obama. Alan Keyes is full of hot air. He is a man with a short fuse who cannot control himself in a confrontation. He sputters and spits out the first thing that comes to mind without thought. He knows nothing about Illinois, being a man from another state who has run for several offices in his own state that he did not win. He, himself, said anyone who would allow himself to be transported to another state in order to run for office is not much of a candidate. He also said he would never do anything like that to his political career. That was because no one had ever asked him to run for anything. All the Republicans had to do was dig him out (or up) and clean him up a little. Now that Keyes is on the campaign trail, he is giving the impression that he no longer needs the Republican Party, that he can do it all by himself, his way. If you listen to this guy you will hear him talk about everything but what he is going to do for Illinois because he does not know what Illinois wants done, or what needs to be done. First of all, he needs to find out what the important issues are in the State of Illinois and then he should work out HIS plan to deal with them. Instead, right out of the gate, he starts blasting a man who is a long time politician in the State of Illinois, who knows the issues and are ready to deal with them. Keyes should know by now that it takes more than just having an address in the state to make you worthy to run for a political office in that state. Look at his past record. Alan Keyes is akin to a pit bull who has jumped on a small piece of the political bone and all else be damned. He wants to downgrade Obama’s character which he knows absolutely nothing about. How could he when his last few years were spent trying to build his own character, and in that he failed miserably. He should spend some time studying his opponent’s outlook and plan of action should his opponent win this election, and stop trying to force his opinion of what he thinks are Obama’s shortcomings. The Republican Party is embarrassed to death at Alan Keyes actions now because he is thumbing his nose at them, the same people who brought his sorry ashcan to this State. They should be embarrassed. In a way it serves the party right because they went to such extreme measures to find what they THOUGHT was a formidable candidate to run against Obama. All they can do now is try to hide their embarrassment, hold their collective breaths, and ride it out until the election is over. Maybe next time the Republicans won’t be so extreme when choosing a candidate to run on their ticket. In that regard, they owe Alan Keyes a great deal. In the future, The Republican Party will know who and what NOT to choose when considering a formidable candidate to run for public office, and I am sure they will not give Alan Keyes a second chance. ------------ About the author: Dorothy Williams is the author of "Oooh, My Aching Head".
