Honor Thy Mother And Father?

By Eric Schomburg
Aug 30, 2004

For centuries, the commandment, honor thy mother and father, has been a law in the bible. What does honor thy mother and father truly mean? It means, that a child should honor thy mother and father. Simple huh? But, in these troubled times, what does honoring thy mother and father mean for us, the people of the 21st century?

Why does the bible only say honor thy mother and father? Why couldn’t it say honor thy family? Or honor thy parents only if they so richly deserve it? I personally think that honoring thy mother and father is fine, but should it be absolute? I personally don’t think so. Here’s why.

Should a little girl honor her father, even though he molested her? Should a little boy honor his father if he abuses him? The movie, “Mommie Dearest,” stars Faye Dunaway as the movie star, Joan Crawford. According to the movie, her daughter, Christina Crawford, was abused by her movie star mother. From infamous scenes such as the “no wire hangers!” and took it upon herself to beat Christina with the wire hanger. I’m not saying that this movie is based on actual facts; however, if your mother was beating you with a wire coat hanger, should you honor her? If you answered, “well, she’s my mother, I have to” then you are more susceptible to anything, so don’t be surprised if you get beat by your husband, or have your wife cheat on you, or have your kids put you in a home when you get old.

Now, I’m not saying that any parent shouldn’t discipline their kids, because there is a difference between discipline and abuse. The kids may not understand discipline, but when they have kids of their own, they will. However, I think the term honoring your mother and father is a little extreme. I’m not saying all mothers and fathers are bad, and they do deserve their respect from their children. But for others, it’s hard to honor someone who doesn’t respect you.
