May "Germs" be with you!

Ever since the outbreak of SARS last year, it seems that everyone becomes aware of his/her own health and the importance of personal hygiene. This is good for a change but most of us still are still not diligent or not paying attention to the details of daily life where ˇ§germsˇ¨ are waiting for you - quietly.

Scientists discovered that the shower curtain at home has the highest concentration of bacteria breeding. Well, the safest place is always the most dangerous place. Presumably, bath tub is the place where we wash and clean the "germs" away your body everyday but now it turns out that it is where we are closest to "germs". In fact, germs are commonly found everywhere in our daily lives. They can be everywhere in the office - the air duct, on the table, on the computer monitor, on the mouse (including the mouse pad). They live in our home - the shower curtain, the pillow (our pillow case is the germs breeding ground), the mattress (the dust mites feeding ground) and the floor. There is nowhere safe. It seems we are becoming paranoid but let me share with you a recent experience which you might have come across (if you had noticed) and you can decide.

A new bed mattress was delivered to my home at around three o'clock in the afternoon last winter. My roommate let the delivery man in. Both of us was stunned by the sight. In his hands was a dark grey dusty plastic sheet wherein was my six foot long mattress. He put the mattress against the wall and scuttled off immediately. Initially, I and my roommate looked at each other and were quite hesitant in "attacking" the dusty plastic sheet. It's a dirty job and somebody got to do it! Without wearing any protective gear, I drew in deep breath and cut the mattress with a razor but almost immediately, my throat turned dry and sore. Worse of all, I sneezed and my nose started to run. I then realized that I have taken in a high concentration of germs from the plastic sheet. My roommate also had dry and sore throat but not as serious as I did. (Our immune system was working quite well!) We quickly put on face masks (thanks to training during SARS) and plastic gloves and continued removing the plastic sheet and dumped it into the garbage bin downstairs. But it was a bit too late, my sore throat persisted and I could not swallow saliva. The same night, I had headache and running nose. I immediately put some lotion and used a spoon to scrap the skin around my nasal area, two rows of bright red dots appeared around the nose. (Note: Scraping method is one of the treatments used by Chinese. Usually scraping is done on the respective energy channels - like the lung channel [if one is suffering from cold and flu - viral infection] - if bright red dots appear, it means that some of the virus that entered the body has risen up to the skin surface and is being disposed from the body by blood). I suffered from flu for almost one whole week.

Since then, I learnt to be extremely careful about the environment. I always carry face mask and plastic disposable gloves in my bag just in case. Whenever I feel infected by virus, I would immediately scrap the skin around the viral attack area so as to reduce the concentration of germs before I get to see the doctor.
