Strange Illusions

By Ambreen Momin

As cliché as it sounds, there is a new guy at school who has swept me off my feet. Seriously. He totally knocked me over. I see those grins on your faces: Ambreen has a crush! Not in the least. This guy is in my AP Language and Composition class and he makes it a point to shove past me and make me lose my balance at the end of every class. Every single time he does it (and he's done it about 12 times) I stop and watch him hurry off. This is the guy who told the class he likes thinking in his spare time. This is the guy who said that the most valuable part of anybody's character is individuality. This is the guy who is now in the clutches of the drinkers.

I should've seen it coming. For once I thought someone in my school actually had a brain! He said was deep. He said he liked thinking. He said he liked people who played by their own rules. He said, he said, he said. That's load of steaming manure if you ask me. Why don't people mean what they say anymore? Is the sole aim of everybody's life to become "cool"? Maybe he thinks the part of the dark brooding musician suits him-I don't exactly disagree- but what is the point of playing a part? What person in their right mind would spend all their time pretending to be someone else and then start whining about how they can't "find themselves?" Everyone.

I honestly must read this great scholar "Everyone." He seems to have written so much and all of it wrong! Everyone says in order to be cool you must be intellectually challenged (stupid) and chemically influenced (drunk, stoned or both). Everyone says the perfect female is one with a tiny waist and large breasts with a non- existent IQ and a tendency to be easy. Everyone says the perfect male is one that has more muscle than Superman, the well chiseled features of a Greek God and the ability to blow you away (I suppose this is why you must be feather-light: it's bad for his ego if he can't.)

This is how I think the social hierarchy should be. The intelligent people on top, below them the unintelligent and then lastly the drinkers/druggies. Our society today is so materialistic and so physically oriented they have completely forgotten what it is to be human. We were the ones given the gift to think; we were the ones given the gift of memory. What do we do with it? Absolutely nothing.

Leo Tolstoy once wrote, "What a strange illusion it is to suppose that beauty is goodness." He isn't the only ones who have warned us that we should not put our faith in the faces of others. Listen to the old sayings: never judge a book by its cover, beauty is only skin deep, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The beautiful ones are the ones who appreciate life, who appreciate and treasure the body they have.

He shoved past me again today. This time, instead of saying "What the f***?" I said thanks. He turned around, confused; I smiled and in my head reminded myself how lucky I am that I know that the best thing for me to be is myself. He walked into a wall. Loser.
