A Second Letter to Charlene at 'Szirine'

By Jon Aristides
Aug 28, 2004

Hi Charlene. Thanks for your email and glad to hear Szirine is doing so well. As regards my comments on James Shivers's poetry, well, I believe myself to be a free agent. I WAS an editor and there WAS a story section at Szirine, but both position and section disappeared during a fit of Remko's sulks---in the middle of a frank exchange of views, let's say. Without consultation. In these circumstances, I don't feel myself fettered by any kind of editorial team spirit. I am now an individual interested in art and culture and I call it as I see it. Mr. James Shivers, his ideas and poetry do not impress me. Also, I do not believe that honesty in intellectual debate is a bad thing or someting to be avoided ('Do I dare disturb the universe?'). In 1986 I completed a 100.000 word Master's thesis on T.S. Eliot and his influence on writers of the 1930s. From this, you will understand that these are areas that I am likely to have some strong opinions about.

I believe that the present editorial policy of Szirine lacks dynamism. On the other hand, I have been involved in the past and, furthermore, the magazine deals with areas that are also interesting to me. I think there is no reason for me not to state an honest opinion. Also, I have now provided you with the series of articles about Saudi Arabia and the Arab world that we initially envisaged together. As you say, what we have done is already enough. To take it any further would be to bump up against our disagreements.

Again, I wish you all the best with your new enterprises.

Best Wishes, Jon Aristides.
