Aug 27, 2004 John Kerry, the Democrat party and its media arm (AKA “mainstream press”) continue to claim that John Kerry is being smeared by the Swiftboat Veterans for Truth. On its Wednesday Editorial page, the Boston Globe stated: “AN ANGRY group of swift boat veterans has vowed to continue airing its odious ads attacking John Kerry's military service even after many of its claims have been discredited” and “yet the smear goes on and on.” As the word “smear” is being thrown around indiscriminately, in regards to Mr. Kerry’s war record, I thought a definition of the word “smear” (used in this context) might be in order. Merriam-Webster defines it as: “a usually unsubstantiated charge or accusation against a person or organization”. The key word, in my estimation, is “unsubstantiated”. The problem here, in regards to Kerry’s vs. the Swiftboat Veterans for Truth, is that several of the charges have already been substantiated. Kerry surrogates have, to date, admitted that Kerry’s Christmas in Cambodia story was false and that the “wound” Kerry received for his first Purple Heart could well have been from “self-inflicted [albeit unintentional] injuries”-John Hurley. Another substantiated claim is that Kerry fled in his Swift Boat after a mine had exploded and that he was the only Swift Boat commander to do so. Indications also suggest that Jim Rassmann (the Swiftie saved by Kerry) was “blown off” Kerry’s boat either due to the explosion or to Kerry’s fleeing. Is Kerry, then, being smeared? The answer is an unequivocal NO. No doubt, other claims made by the Swifties will also be proved true. Thus far, many of the claims made by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth against Kerry have been authenticated. There will, most likely, be more claims that will be validated. Certainly, the Swifties have the right, under the US Constitution, to voice their claims. No one should be allowed to quell Free Speech… especially if that speech is true. ------------ About the author: About the author: Sher Zieve is a Conservative political commentator, appeared on the CBS program "Mysteries of the Millennium", has been included in "Who's Who in the West", "Who's Who in the US" and "Who's Who in Entertainment".
