A Letter To Remko De Knekker About 'Szirine.'

By Jon Aristides
Aug 26, 2004

Hi Remko. I appreciate your honest reply. Sometimes it's necessary to let off steam and I guess that's what I did in my last letter. Perhaps this was due to the fact that I felt frustrated that for some time my best input on policy has been ignored. On the other hand Szirine is your concern (with Charlene) and it is finally for you to make the decisions. I have my own concerns and I am in charge of that for my own pages and writings.

I feel you need to consider more deeply what is 'culture.' You appear to have a rather linear view of it. It is not necessary to keep talking about it all the time. Someone who has lived in Borneo all his life will inevitably reflect his 'culture' should he write something about his life. Often opinions are culturally orientated. Arabs believe Israel is a criminal state that exists with the open and tacit support of America, while the Americans and most western nations think of Israel as the only western style democracy in the region ( oops, don't want to get controversial!). You really cannot write anything other than bland peripheral pieces about the region if you continue to ignore this political reality.

I am not surprised that you are a programmer Remko. I always believed that this was probably the case: Charlene provides the literary input, while you put up the slick exterior. I will state my opinion that I see in many of your perspectives the typical demeanour of the programmer (and I have known many) who is finally more concerned with the package than the content ( but also, usually has a large ego and a certainty that he is right about everything). No offence intended. Just a forthright and honest opinion.

I am happy to try and give you references to other sites, as you request--but it seems we disagree about much. I feel that your present enthusiasm for modern poetry is certainly going off wildly at a tangent. If you are not careful, for all your protestations, you are going to wind up with one more minority interest 'lit. mag.' There are already lots of them out there if you take a look and none of them are doing too well.

Finally, Remko, it is not necessary that we agree. You will take Szirine in the direction you like and that is fair enough.

Best Wishes, Jon Aristides.
