What Gives Anyone The Right?

By L.J. Chapman
Aug 26, 2004

I have run across my share of scum in my lifetime. I have seen the worst that society has to offer. I have been with the girlfriend- beater, the "friend" who doesn't know what no means. I've defended off the attacker and won, and I've defended off the attacker and lost. But I've dealt with that. That's in the past. Here's my new question.

I make no effort hiding the fact that I am having a bit of financial trouble right now. Since my fiance' has been locked up and especially now that my legs are bum, it makes income a little harder. But life doesn't go with your situation, and my car broke. I needed new brakes and tires. So I took it to my friendly neighborhood auto repair chain, and got it fixed. I talked to the manager who is an associate of mine, a light friend of sorts, and asked him when the almost 300 dollar bill came through, if I could pay half and half. He said there was no problem.

I paid the first half, 133 dollars that day, and told him I would be able to pay the rest the next week. The next night I get a phone call from him asking me to come down and visit him. He began to make comments about "taking me out back" and such. I thought nothing of it

I went down to see him, accompanied by my cousin and roommate, the next week, where he told me that he would forget the rest of the bill if I would, shall we say, do him a favor. Basically, it came down to a sex for service issue. I am faithful to my fiance', I won't do that. I am not a prostitute.

I didn't go back to the shop, for any reason, not even to pay the rest of the money. He called almost daily, sometimes up to six times a day, and that eventually stopped. Soon I started getting very professional calls from him saying that if I didn't pay the bill legal action would be taken. With the coaxing of my family and friends, I called his home office.

Apparently, the home office of this said company looks down upon the sex for service policy that this guy was offering. I also found out that I didn't owe almost 300 dollars, I owed a mere 104 dollars, which I could have paid off all at once.

Now a new fear is in my head. Is this man going to come after me? He has all my information. Name, address, phone, all of which are printed on the reciept for the work he did on my car. Do I have to change my number? I am scared and I am angry. What gives anyone the right to take advantage of another person like that? Be it a rapist or someone as simple as our manager. Where in the books does it say you can take sex or sexual favors at anytime. This is not right. It needs to be stopped. Start educating our boys early that this is not how it goes. Do something. As for now, I have to lock all my doors and wait and see if I need to change my phone number. I hope, if anything, that this message will get to someone and show them that it's not right and start something.
