A Bad World Means a Broken Leg on the Water

By Jim Cripps

(I am about to bite the hand that feeds me.)

Imagine turning on the television and hearing that a boy was hit, suffered a broken leg, and the person that hit him is unknown. Not totally peculiar, except in this instance, it was on a lake.

A woman on her Sea-Doo, not watching where she was going, broad-sided a boy as he was on his smaller jet ski. Family and witnesses say she helped the boy out of the water, and then disappeared. The boy and his parents did not get any apology, and no further assistance from the woman, who is still unidentified. More angry than hurt, the youngster seeks only a little sympathy from the lady that hit him. And perhaps medical assistance, for his family has no insurance. With a wrapped leg, waiting for the swelling to go down so he can get a cast put on, he waits and asks, "Why have we been left to suffer?" (Not his exact words, but it is implied.)

The family calls the accident a hit-and-run, and wonder where this woman that broke their boy's leg is. The police, without proper legislation to back them, have their hands tied. The woman did not immediately leave the scene, and apparently, there is no action that the law can take. It is up to the media to help, the ones we sometimes revile. The ones that bring us only the 'fantastic' news. The ones that would love to see Bush and Kerry go 12 rounds. I say, "Psh, on the media!" How dare they come out of the woodwork when they smell ratings. We must pump them for all they are worth. And pay for the medical bills, too. television news can afford that at least. Perhaps that would teach them to be righteous all the time.

But of the woman? She could not take the blame, so she ran away. Is society that bad? Do we teach no responsibility, and only blame? Has it really become easier to point the finger than to stand up and say, "It was me?" Do we have to go on Jerry Springer to let out all the evils? Is that our retribution? This boy has suffered for us, and that sounds awfully familiar.
