John Kerry Censoring Veterans [When is Free Speech Not Free?]

By Ken Hughes
Aug 25, 2004

Note to John Kerry:

The Constitution of the United States, Amendment One:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exorcise thereof; or abridge the freedom of speech; or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble; and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Has anyone told Senators McCain and Finegold and the Supreme Court about this?

Congress has and is making every effort to restrict our freedom to question political campaign promises. I’m not sure what the new rules governing campaigning are? I doubt anyone is. When congress finally gets through with a bill and the President signs it, it looks more like a stack of counterfeit twenties than something that actually benefits what it was intended for.

Has it ever occurred to Congress that in order to control campaign spending you must control those who do the spending, Politicians. That probably isn’t complicated enough for a politician to understand. Congress isn’t geared to deal with simple problems with simple solutions. If there’s an immediate answer to a problem then someone didn’t understand the problem. Answers can’t be found with out the benefit of committees.

Congress would have us we the voters believe they are beyond scrutiny. If there’s a problem in campaign financing then it must be the public who’s responsible.

Election laws are like a river. When you dam up one stream the water flows down another. They can never stop the flow of the river they can only slow it down and when they do it just builds to become an even larger uncontrollable river.

It is my understanding ad-hoc political campaigns can’t run ads after a certain time prior to an election. To counter these new laws Movies and TV shows are being made to generate support for a particular candidate. The Internet plays a big part in campaigning. These are things congress can’t control try as they may. The end result what was intended to limit the amount of money being spent on elections has in fact doubled it. I’m sure Senators McCain and Finegold are sitting in their offices muttering “Which way did they go George, Which way did they go”? For those of you who live in Rio Linda it’s an old cartoon. For those who haven’t made it to Rio Linda we’ll explain later.

The Kerry Campaign is trying to stop the Swift-Boat-Gate affair by using the courts. It would seem to me if Kerry is so concerned America is losing its freedoms under the Bush administration he would welcome decent to prove his point. I don’t question the Swift Boat book is political, [I’m reading Unfit for Command.] So was Michael Moor’s Movie. As is George Soros spending millions on defeating George Bush. Move-On Org is about as independent of the Kerry Campaign as Big Macs are to carbs. The Republicans don’t get a pass they have their sneaky little Elves out there spreading the good word. It’s like the world’s oldest profession. They can regulate it forever. They can’t control it. It’s politics the world’s second oldest profession. Although I must admit it’s hard to tell the participants of either sport apart.

I have this to say to Congress. “Stop wasting our money and your time on rules you have no intention of obeying”. We may be dumb, but we aren’t stupid.

If congress where to follow the constitution they are free to make any law they like restricting their speech. They have no right restricting yours and mine. I don’t care what the Supreme Court say. Laws restricting political speech, any speech is unconstitutional.
