At What Cost Are You Willing To Live?

By Amanda Baker
Aug 24, 2004

Right to live? At what cost? People think that it's a right they are supposed to have... Maybe it is or maybe it isn't. Here's my argument:

People have to live.

At what cost are we willing to pay for that? Are people willing to live on prescription drugs to have some semblance of a normal life. But then I run up to the definition of normal, is normal healthy and happy, or is normal what other people define it as (white picket fences and all the money needed for personal comfort). Are we willing to sacrifice other people for that right to live? I think that is so.

We sacrifice so much for the instinctual need for life, we sacrifice the enviroment, our own heath, and our children. How we sacrifice all of this is a cultural choice. The culture has decided that individual comforts matter more than anything. That as in Star Trek:

"The needs of the one out way the needs of the many."

This has to change. Everybody has to set aside some of the selfishness. Maybe people could start to driveless to decrease polution. Maybe purchase cars that are enviroment friendly, the SUV's are big gas guzzlers and help make the middle class into the poor class really quick. That would help everybody, in the pocket book since a report came out yesterday that gas prices are about to reach $3.00 a gallon next year. It is a way to encourage the search for fuels that pollute less. This is only a suggestion.

Start to look at the world one day at a time and find a way to make somebody else's life better, which in the end helps more people live a happy life.
