Race Day (Part 1)

NASCAR in New England? You betcha!!! We love our racing here in New England, and it shows. It all starts early Friday morning. You must prepare for Friday on Thursday, start coughing, hacking, sweating, and telling everyone that you feel like death warmed over. This is good. Now on Friday morning, you call in sick, so you can get to the track by 9am, to watch the qualifying rounds. All right, I'm stretching the truth a bit here, but how many people can get Friday off?

I wish I could go on Friday, but we have a Summer business, so I can't head to the track till Saturday night or early Sunday morning. And that's a chore in itself. I pick up my Brother-in-law around 8am. After trying to say bye to the children, which takes a half hour or so of crying and pouting, we're off. We have our coolers, (Full of ice, beer, cheese, soda, etc.) Remember this info for later on. We begin our two hour drive through many, many, back roads in Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. You see, if you take the main Interstate, your two hour drive has now turned to four hours.

An hour and forty-five minutes later we arrive. We park in our usual spot, about a half mile from the track. Not a bad walk, if you weren't us two out of shape couch potatoes. We prepare for our walk, coolers in hand, we begin. Remember how heavy the coolers are? Remember the old saying, "I walked to school, uphill both ways" Now I know where it came from. This parking lot had hills, many hills, between us and the main gate. These hills were thirty feet straight up, and I mean straight up. And when you finally got to the top, there was no top. It was twenty feet, straight down. We did this mini Olympics (Had to get that in there) for fifteen minutes. Finally, the main gate is in sight, we are on flat ground. We walk up to the main gate, out of breath, and the guard asks us, "Can I see your tickets please" Glenn looks at me, and I look at him............Where are the tickets? Oh no!!, They are still safely locked in the truck.............! ...What now?

No matter what strange things we've been through at the track, that is one story out of many, it's still worth the effort and expense to be a part of the most exciting sport in America.

GOD Bless America
