The Grit

By Max Burns
Aug 20, 2004

Tension is something I usually never deal with. Or at least, it used to be something I never had to deal with. Now, it seems, life is being thrust onto my plate with increasing speed.

Not that I’m complaining, I mean.

I love the life I lead: hard work on government law courses, an internship with the Democratic Party, a loving and good and fair girlfriend, and a purpose. A purpose. I never said to myself, “This is going to be easy, or it’s not going to be at all.” I’m glad I didn’t.

We have within us the potential for unparalleled greatness, but to achieve it we must strike a balance. My dear girlfriend, bless her, is stressed out with the new coming of school and the masses of homework piling up at her desk. I can understand her.

I’ve had more than ever myself.

I’m not going to let that change things, though, or manage to screw anything up in my life. I’ve taken to commanding my own life, as I always should have, as all of us always should have. Relationships are about compromise and sacrifice, the things that truly endear you to another person. Finding the balance of loves – professional, personal and academic – is the toil of the perfectionist.

School takes up from six in the morning until one in the afternoon. Thank you senior release, or it’d go until nearly a quarter to three. My “promotion” to Assistant Volunteer Coordinator for the Democratic Party here in Indiana goes from four until seven in the evening.

That leave me from 1:30 – 3:30 in the afternoon, when my dear girlfriend works, and 7:30 – 9:00 in the evening; homework time for both of us. My, this entry is short. Just shows how little time I have. It’s not even a page on Microsoft Word yet. They’re usually one and a half.

I love weekends. They let me get things back in order and prepare for another week. So this is life, eh? It’s not too shabby. Tiring, gritty, not always pleasant, but not too shabby. I prefer it to the coddling of high school and things of that sort. I’ll be back to writing on here again as soon as I can get some time. It’s good to be writing again. Political work coming soon.
